धृतराष्ट्र उवाच
जम्बूखण्डस् त्वया प्रोक्तो यथावद् इह संजय ॥
विष्कम्भम् अस्य प्रब्रूहि परिमाणं च तत्त्वतः ॥
समुद्रस्य प्रमाणं च सम्यग् अच्छिद्रदर्शन ॥
शाकद्वीपं च मे ब्रूहि कुशद्वीपं च संजय ॥
शाल्मलं चैव तत्त्वेन क्रौञ्चद्वीपं तथैव च ॥
ब्रूहि गावल्गणे सर्वं राहोः सोमार्कयोस् तथा ॥
संजय उवाच
राजन् सुबहवो द्वीपा यैर् इदं संततं जगत् ॥
सप्त त्व् अहं प्रवक्ष्यामि चन्द्रादित्यौ ग्रहांस् तथा ॥

rājan subahavo dvīpā yair idaṃ saṃtataṃ jagat ||
sapta tv ahaṃ pravakṣyāmi candrādityau grahāṃs tathā ||
Dhritarashtra said: "O Sanjaya, you have duly described Jambu-khanda; now tell me in detail and in truth its breadth and size, and also the measure of the ocean, O perceptive one. Tell me of Shakadvipa and Kushadvipa, of Shalmala and, in exact truth, of Krauncadvipa, O son of Gavalgana, and also all about Rahu, the moon, and the sun." Sanjaya said: "O king, the islands are very many, and by them this world is spread out. But I shall tell of seven, and also of the moon, the sun, and the planets."
