tato rathānīkamukhād upetya; sarvāstravit kāñcanacitravarmā ||
javena śūro 'bhisasāra sarvāṃs; tathārjunasyātra suto 'bhimanyuḥ ||
teṣāṃ mahāstrāṇi mahārathānām; asaktakarmā vinihatya kārṣṇiḥ ||
babhau mahāmantrahutārcimālī; sadogataḥ san bhagavān ivāgniḥ ||
The chariot-warrior, struck by a chariot, fell together with his charioteer, horses, chariot, and banner; the elephant, struck by an elephant, collapsed; the foot-soldier fell, struck down by a foot-soldier. Marvelous to behold, the herds of fine horses, wheeling and clashing against advancing herds, were wounded by arrows and struck by javelins and swords. Shields adorned with rows of golden stars, hurled by heroes, cleft by axes, javelins, and swords, fell to the ground. Some chariot-warriors, together with their charioteers, crushed by elephant tusks and mighty trunks, tumbled down; and the finest elephants, struck by arrows of the finest charioteer, fell to the earth. Men, struck down and trampled by the onrush of streams of elephants, heard the anguished cries of horsemen and foot-soldiers beaten by tusks, bodies, and tails, and sank to the ground. In great terror, amid elephants, horses, and chariots thrown into confusion, Bhishma beheld the bearer of the banner with the king of monkeys, surrounded by mahārathas. Shantanava, with his tall palm-tree banner raised, borne by the speed of his fine horses, charged at Kiritin, whose path blazed with the lightning of great astras and arrows. Likewise Drona and the others rushed toward the son of Indra, who was the equal of Shakra: Kripa, Shalya, Vivimshati, Duryodhana, and Saumadatti, O king. Then Abhimanyu, the son of Arjuna, knower of all astras, in bright golden armor, valiantly and swiftly came forth from the front of the chariot-host and rushed upon them all. Having deftly repelled the great astras of those mahārathas, Karshni shone like the holy Agni, kindled by great mantras in an assembly.'
