Seeing him again and again put the great army to flight and advance like death itself, all lost heart. Wherever the Pandava looked, mace upraised, O Bharata, there all the armies gave way. He tore through the armies, unconquered by the floods of forces, and swallowed up the battle formations, like Antaka with gaping mouth. Seeing Vrikodara, so terrible in his deeds and wielding the great mace, Bhishma at once advanced against him. On his chariot, with a great rumble like a cloud and the splendor of the sun, he covered Bhima in a rain of arrows, like rain-bringing Parjanya. Seeing Bhishma advancing, like Death with jaws agape, the mighty-armed and wrathful Bhima went forth to meet him.

Bhishma appears as an answer to Bhima’s unstoppable force. This is a clash of two forms of strength: Bhima tears the ranks apart from within, while Bhishma comes as the elder discipline of war, seeking once more to bring chaos under the order of arrows.
