In the battle, heads severed by sharp arrows fell like a shower of stones from the sky, O bull of the Bharatas. Fallen heads could be seen, adorned with earrings and turbans, blazing with gold, O best of the Bharatas. The earth was covered with limbs torn by arrows, arms still gripping their bows, and other arms adorned with bracelets. It was strewn with armored limbs, ornamented hands, beautiful moonlike faces with eyes red at the corners, and with every part of the bodies of elephants, horses, and men, O king. In a single moment the whole earth-nurturer lay covered with them. Tumultuous clouds of dust flashed with the lightning of weapons, and the din of arms was like thunder. Thus between the Kurus and the Pandavas, O Bharata, unfolded a tumultuous, bitter clash in which blood flowed like water."

The description of battle deliberately refuses to make death heroic: the beauty of golden ornaments and moonlike faces lies among rent bodies. A war begun for the sake of power turns the earth into a place of bloody rain.
