संजय उवाच
तथा प्रवृत्ते संग्रामे निवृत्ते च सुशर्मणि ॥
प्रभग्नेषु च वीरेषु पाण्डवेन महात्मना ॥
क्षुभ्यमाणे बले तूर्णं सागरप्रतिमे तव ॥
प्रत्युद्याते च गाङ्गेये त्वरितं विजयं प्रति ॥
दृष्ट्वा दुर्योधनो राजन् रणे पार्थस्य विक्रमम् ॥
त्वरमाणः समभ्येत्य सर्वांस् तान् अब्रवीन् नृपान् ॥
तेषां च प्रमुखे शूरं सुशर्माणं महाबलम् ॥
मध्ये सर्वस्य सैन्यस्य भृशं संहर्षयन् वचः ॥
एष भीष्मः शांतनवो योद्धुकामो धनंजयम् ॥
सर्वात्मना कुरुश्रेष्ठस् त्यक्त्वा जीवितम् आत्मनः ॥
तं प्रयान्तं परानीकं सर्वसैन्येन भारतम् ॥
संयत्ताः समरे सर्वे पालयध्वं पितामहम् ॥
बाढम् इत्य् एवम् उक्त्वा तु तान्य् अनीकानि सर्वशः ॥
नरेन्द्राणां महाराज समाजग्मुः पितामहम् ॥
ततः प्रयातः सहसा भीष्मः शांतनवो ऽर्जुनम् ॥
रणे भारतम् आयान्तम् आससाद महाबलम् ॥
महाश्वेताश्वयुक्तेन भीमवानरकेतुना ॥
महता मेघनादेन रथेनाति विराजत ॥
समरे सर्वसैन्यानाम् उपयातं धनंजयम् ॥
अभवत् तुमुलो नादो भयाद् दृष्ट्वा किरीटिनम् ॥
अभीशुहस्तं कृष्णं च दृष्ट्वादित्यम् इवापरम् ॥
मध्यंदिनगतं संख्ये न शेकुः प्रतिवीक्षितुम् ॥
तथा शांतनवं भीष्मं श्वेताश्वं श्वेतकार्मुकम् ॥
न शेकुः पाण्डवा द्रष्टुं श्वेतग्रहम् इवोदितम् ॥
स सर्वतः परिवृतस् त्रिगर्तैः सुमहात्मभिः ॥
भ्रातृभिस् तव पुत्रैश् च तथान्यैश् च महारथैः ॥
भारद्वाजस् तु समरे मत्स्यं विव्याध पत्रिणा ॥
ध्वजं चास्य शरेणाजौ धनुश् चैकेन चिच्छिदे ॥
तद् अपास्य धनुश् छिन्नं विराटो वाहिनीपतिः ॥
अन्यद् आदत्त वेगेन धनुर् भारसहं दृढम् ॥
शरांश् चाशीविषाकाराञ् ज्वलितान् पन्नगान् इव ॥
द्रोणं त्रिभिः प्रविव्याध चतुर्भिश् चास्य वाजिनः ॥
ध्वजम् एकेन विव्याध सारथिं चास्य पञ्चभिः ॥
धनुर् एकेषुणाविध्यत् तत्राक्रुध्यद् द्विजर्षभः ॥
तस्य द्रोणो ऽवधीद् अश्वाञ् शरैः संनतपर्वभिः ॥
अष्टाभिर् भरतश्रेष्ठ सूतम् एकेन पत्रिणा ॥
स हताश्वाद् अवप्लुत्य स्यन्दनाद् धतसारथिः ॥
आरुरोह रथं तूर्णं शङ्खस्य रथिनां वरः ॥
ततस् तु तौ पितापुत्रौ भारद्वाजं रथे स्थितौ ॥
महता शरवर्षेण वारयाम् आसतुर् बलात् ॥
भारद्वाजस् ततः क्रुद्धः शरम् आशीविषोपमम् ॥
चिक्षेप समरे तूर्णं शङ्खं प्रति जनेश्वर ॥
स तस्य हृदयं भित्त्वा पीत्वा शोणितम् आहवे ॥
जगाम धरणिं बाणो लोहितार्द्रीकृतच्छविः ॥
स पपात रथात् तूर्णं भारद्वाजशराहतः ॥
धनुस् त्यक्त्वा शरांश् चैव पितुर् एव समीपतः ॥
हतं स्वम् आत्मजं दृष्ट्वा विराटः प्राद्रवद् भयात् ॥
उत्सृज्य समरे द्रोणं व्यात्ताननम् इवान्तकम् ॥
भारद्वाजस् ततस् तूर्णं पाण्डवानां महाचमूम् ॥
दारयाम् आस समरे शतशो ऽथ सहस्रशः ॥

saṃyattāḥ samare sarve pālayadhvaṃ pitāmaham ||
bāḍham ity evam uktvā tu tāny anīkāni sarvaśaḥ ||
narendrāṇāṃ mahārāja samājagmuḥ pitāmaham ||
tataḥ prayātaḥ sahasā bhīṣmaḥ śāṃtanavo 'rjunam ||
raṇe bhāratam āyāntam āsasāda mahābalam ||
mahāśvetāśvayuktena bhīmavānaraketunā ||
mahatā meghanādena rathenāti virājata ||
samare sarvasainyānām upayātaṃ dhanaṃjayam ||
abhavat tumulo nādo bhayād dṛṣṭvā kirīṭinam ||
abhīśuhastaṃ kṛṣṇaṃ ca dṛṣṭvādityam ivāparam ||
madhyaṃdinagataṃ saṃkhye na śekuḥ prativīkṣitum ||
tathā śāṃtanavaṃ bhīṣmaṃ śvetāśvaṃ śvetakārmukam ||
na śekuḥ pāṇḍavā draṣṭuṃ śvetagraham ivoditam ||
sa sarvataḥ parivṛtas trigartaiḥ sumahātmabhiḥ ||
bhrātṛbhis tava putraiś ca tathānyaiś ca mahārathaiḥ ||
bhāradvājas tu samare matsyaṃ vivyādha patriṇā ||
dhvajaṃ cāsya śareṇājau dhanuś caikena cicchide ||
tad apāsya dhanuś chinnaṃ virāṭo vāhinīpatiḥ ||
anyad ādatta vegena dhanur bhārasahaṃ dṛḍham ||
śarāṃś cāśīviṣākārāñ jvalitān pannagān iva ||
droṇaṃ tribhiḥ pravivyādha caturbhiś cāsya vājinaḥ ||
dhvajam ekena vivyādha sārathiṃ cāsya pañcabhiḥ ||
dhanur ekeṣuṇāvidhyat tatrākrudhyad dvijarṣabhaḥ ||
tasya droṇo 'vadhīd aśvāñ śaraiḥ saṃnataparvabhiḥ ||
aṣṭābhir bharataśreṣṭha sūtam ekena patriṇā ||
sa hatāśvād avaplutya syandanād dhatasārathiḥ ||
āruroha rathaṃ tūrṇaṃ śaṅkhasya rathināṃ varaḥ ||
tatas tu tau pitāputrau bhāradvājaṃ rathe sthitau ||
mahatā śaravarṣeṇa vārayām āsatur balāt ||
bhāradvājas tataḥ kruddhaḥ śaram āśīviṣopamam ||
cikṣepa samare tūrṇaṃ śaṅkhaṃ prati janeśvara ||
sa tasya hṛdayaṃ bhittvā pītvā śoṇitam āhave ||
jagāma dharaṇiṃ bāṇo lohitārdrīkṛtacchaviḥ ||
sa papāta rathāt tūrṇaṃ bhāradvājaśarāhataḥ ||
dhanus tyaktvā śarāṃś caiva pitur eva samīpataḥ ||
hataṃ svam ātmajaṃ dṛṣṭvā virāṭaḥ prādravad bhayāt ||
utsṛjya samare droṇaṃ vyāttānanam ivāntakam ||
bhāradvājas tatas tūrṇaṃ pāṇḍavānāṃ mahācamūm ||
dārayām āsa samare śataśo 'tha sahasraśaḥ ||
Sanjaya said: "When the battle had thus unfolded, when Susharman had withdrawn and the heroes had been broken by the great-souled Pandava, your ocean-like army quickly grew agitated. Gangeya then hastened out to meet Vijaya. Seeing Partha's valor in battle, King Duryodhana hurried up to all those kings and, in the midst of the whole army, addressed them — above all the mighty hero Susharman — greatly rousing them with these words: 'Here is Bhishma, son of Shantanu, the best of the Kurus, who wishes to fight Dhananjaya with his whole being, having renounced his own life. As this Bharata advances upon the enemy's army with all his forces, let all of you, gathered for battle, guard the grandfather with your entire host.' Having answered, 'So be it,' all the troops of the kings, great king, converged upon the grandfather. Then Bhishma, son of Shantanu, at once advanced and in the battle met the mighty Bharata, Arjuna, who was coming toward him. Arjuna shone upon a great chariot yoked with great white horses, bearing the fearsome monkey banner and rumbling like a great thundercloud. When all the armies saw Dhananjaya approaching in battle, a tumultuous roar of fear arose. Seeing Krishna, the reins in his hands, like a second sun standing at noon in the fight, they could not bear to look at him. Just so the Pandavas could not look upon Bhishma, son of Shantanu, white-horsed and white-bowed, as though upon a rising white planet. He was surrounded on every side by the great-souled Trigartas, by his brothers, by your sons, and by other great chariot-warriors. Meanwhile Bharadvaja in the battle pierced the king of the Matsyas with a feathered arrow; with one arrow he cut his banner, and with another his bow. Throwing aside the severed bow, Virata, the army's commander, swiftly took up another strong bow able to bear great force, and arrows shaped like venomous, blazing serpents. With three arrows he pierced Drona, with four his horses, with one his banner, and with five his charioteer, and with one arrow he struck his bow. At this the bull of the twice-born grew angry. Drona killed his horses with eight well-jointed arrows, and his charioteer with a single feathered arrow, best of the Bharatas. Leaping down from the chariot whose horses were slain and whose charioteer was dead, Shankha, foremost of charioteers, quickly mounted another chariot. Then those two, father and son, standing upon that chariot, held back Bharadvaja by force with a great shower of arrows. Then the enraged Bharadvaja swiftly hurled in battle an arrow like a venomous serpent at Shankha, lord of men. It pierced his heart, drank his blood in the fight, and went into the earth, its shaft made wet and red with blood. Struck by Bharadvaja's arrow, Shankha fell at once from his chariot right beside his father, casting away bow and arrows. Seeing his own son slain, Virata fled in terror, abandoning Drona in the battle, who was like Antaka with gaping jaws. Thereafter Bharadvaja swiftly began to tear apart the great army of the Pandavas in the battle, by hundreds and by thousands."

The chapter opens by placing two radiances side by side: Arjuna with Krishna, and Bhishma in his white splendor. Yet this grandeur is followed at once by Virata's personal tragedy — in the epic, martial glory nearly always stands beside the loss of a son and the fear of death.
