संजय उवाच
भीष्मं तु समरे क्रुद्धं प्रतपन्तं समन्ततः ॥
न शेकुः पाण्डवा द्रष्टुं तपन्तम् इव भास्करम् ॥
ततः सर्वाणि सैन्यानि धर्मपुत्रस्य शासनात् ॥
अभ्यद्रवन्त गाङ्गेयं मर्दयन्तं शितैः शरैः ॥
स तु भीष्मो रणश्लाघी सोमकान् सहसृञ्जयान् ॥
पाञ्चालांश् च महेष्वासान् पातयाम् आस सायकैः ॥
ते वध्यमाना भीष्मेण पाञ्चालाः सोमकैः सह ॥
भीष्मम् एवाभ्ययुस् तूर्णं त्यक्त्वा मृत्युकृतं भयम् ॥
स तेषां रथिनां वीरो भीष्मः शांतनवो युधि ॥
चिच्छेद सहसा राजन् बाहून् अथ शिरांसि च ॥
विरथान् रथिनश् चक्रे पिता देवव्रतस् तव ॥
पतितान्य् उत्तमाङ्गानि हयेभ्यो हयसादिनाम् ॥
निर्मनुष्यांश् च मातङ्गाञ् शयानान् पर्वतोपमान् ॥
अपश्याम महाराज भीष्मास्त्रेण प्रमोहितान् ॥
न तत्रासीत् पुमान् कश् चित् पाण्डवानां विशां पते ॥
अन्यत्र रथिनां श्रेष्ठाद् भीमसेनान् महाबलात् ॥
स हि भीष्मं समासाद्य ताडयाम् आस संयुगे ॥
ततो निष्टानको घोरो भीष्मभीमसमागमे ॥
बभूव सर्वसैन्यानां घोररूपो भयानकः ॥
तथैव पाण्डवा हृष्टाः सिंहनादम् अथानदन् ॥

na śekuḥ pāṇḍavā draṣṭuṃ tapantam iva bhāskaram ||
tataḥ sarvāṇi sainyāni dharmaputrasya śāsanāt ||
abhyadravanta gāṅgeyaṃ mardayantaṃ śitaiḥ śaraiḥ ||
sa tu bhīṣmo raṇaślāghī somakān sahasṛñjayān ||
pāñcālāṃś ca maheṣvāsān pātayām āsa sāyakaiḥ ||
te vadhyamānā bhīṣmeṇa pāñcālāḥ somakaiḥ saha ||
bhīṣmam evābhyayus tūrṇaṃ tyaktvā mṛtyukṛtaṃ bhayam ||
sa teṣāṃ rathināṃ vīro bhīṣmaḥ śāṃtanavo yudhi ||
ciccheda sahasā rājan bāhūn atha śirāṃsi ca ||
virathān rathinaś cakre pitā devavratas tava ||
patitāny uttamāṅgāni hayebhyo hayasādinām ||
nirmanuṣyāṃś ca mātaṅgāñ śayānān parvatopamān ||
apaśyāma mahārāja bhīṣmāstreṇa pramohitān ||
na tatrāsīt pumān kaś cit pāṇḍavānāṃ viśāṃ pate ||
anyatra rathināṃ śreṣṭhād bhīmasenān mahābalāt ||
sa hi bhīṣmaṃ samāsādya tāḍayām āsa saṃyuge ||
tato niṣṭānako ghoro bhīṣmabhīmasamāgame ||
babhūva sarvasainyānāṃ ghorarūpo bhayānakaḥ ||
tathaiva pāṇḍavā hṛṣṭāḥ siṃhanādam athānadan ||
Sanjaya said: 'The Pandavas could not bear to look upon Bhishma, enraged in battle and blazing on every side, any more than upon the burning sun. Then, by the command of the son of Dharma, all the armies rushed upon Gangeya, who was crushing them with sharp arrows. But Bhishma, glorious in battle, felled the Somakas together with the Srinjayas and the mighty archers of the Panchalas with his arrows. Struck down by Bhishma, the Panchalas together with the Somakas cast off the fear of death and rushed swiftly straight at him. This hero among charioteers, Bhishma, the son of Shantanu, suddenly severed their arms and heads in that battle, O king. Devavrata, your father, made charioteers carless; we saw the heads of horsemen fallen from their steeds, and elephants without their riders lying like mountains, stupefied by Bhishma's weapon, great king. Among the Pandavas there was no one there, lord of peoples, except the mighty Bhimasena, the best of charioteers. For he approached Bhishma and struck him in the fight. Then, at the meeting of Bhishma and Bhima, a terrible and fearsome din arose among all the armies; and the Pandavas, rejoicing, raised a lion's roar.'
