अभिमन्यू रथोदारः पिशङ्गैस् तुरगोत्तमैः ॥
अभिदुद्राव तेजस्वी दुर्योधनबलं महत् ॥
विकिरञ् शरवर्षाणि वारिधारा इवाम्बुदः ॥
न शेकुः समरे क्रुद्धं सौभद्रम् अरिसूदनम् ॥
शस्त्रौघिणं गाहमानं सेनासागरम् अक्षयम् ॥
निवारयितुम् अप्य् आजौ त्वदीयाः कुरुपुंगवाः ॥
तेन मुक्ता रणे राजञ् शराः शत्रुनिबर्हणाः ॥
क्षत्रियान् अनयञ् शूरान् प्रेतराजनिवेशनम् ॥
यमदण्डोपमान् घोराञ् ज्वलनाशीविषोपमान् ॥
सौभद्रः समरे क्रुद्धः प्रेषयाम् आस सायकान् ॥
रथिनं च रथात् तूर्णं हयपृष्ठाच् च सादिनम् ॥
गजारोहांश् च सगजान् पातयाम् आस फाल्गुनिः ॥
तस्य तत् कुर्वतः कर्म महत् संख्ये ऽद्भुतं नृपाः ॥
पूजयां चक्रिरे हृष्टाः प्रशशंसुश् च फाल्गुनिम् ॥
तान्य् अनीकानि सौभद्रो द्रावयन् बह्व् अशोभत ॥
तूलराशिम् इवाधूय मारुतः सर्वतोदिशम् ॥
तेन विद्राव्यमाणानि तव सैन्यानि भारत ॥
त्रातारं नाध्यगच्छन्त पङ्के मग्ना इव द्विपाः ॥
विद्राव्य सर्वसैन्यानि तावकानि नरोत्तमः ॥
अभिमन्युः स्थितो राजन् विधूमो ऽग्निर् इव ज्वलन् ॥
न चैनं तावकाः सर्वे विषेहुर् अरिघातिनम् ॥
प्रदीप्तं पावकं यद्वत् पतंगाः कालचोदिताः ॥

rathinaṃ ca rathāt tūrṇaṃ hayapṛṣṭhāc ca sādinam ||
gajārohāṃś ca sagajān pātayām āsa phālguniḥ ||
tasya tat kurvataḥ karma mahat saṃkhye 'dbhutaṃ nṛpāḥ ||
pūjayāṃ cakrire hṛṣṭāḥ praśaśaṃsuś ca phālgunim ||
tāny anīkāni saubhadro drāvayan bahv aśobhata ||
tūlarāśim ivādhūya mārutaḥ sarvatodiśam ||
tena vidrāvyamāṇāni tava sainyāni bhārata ||
trātāraṃ nādhyagacchanta paṅke magnā iva dvipāḥ ||
vidrāvya sarvasainyāni tāvakāni narottamaḥ ||
abhimanyuḥ sthito rājan vidhūmo 'gnir iva jvalan ||
na cainaṃ tāvakāḥ sarve viṣehur arighātinam ||
pradīptaṃ pāvakaṃ yadvat pataṃgāḥ kālacoditāḥ ||

वारिधाराः इव अम्बुदःvāridhārāḥ iva ambudaḥas a cloud pours streams of water; like a raincloud pouring streams of rain
न शेकुः समरे क्रुद्धम्na śekuḥ samare kruddhamcould not, in battle, the enraged; were not able, in combat,
सौभद्रम् अरिसूदनम्saubhadram arisūdanamSaubhadra, the destroyer of foes; the son of Subhadra, slayer of enemies
शस्त्रौघिणम् गाहमानम्śastraughiṇam gāhamānamentering the flood of weapons; plunging into the torrent of arms
सेनासागरम् अक्षयम्senāsāgaram akṣayaminto the inexhaustible ocean of the army; into the bottomless sea of the host
निवारयितुम् अपि आजौnivārayitum api ājaueven to stop in battle; even to restrain on the field
त्वदीयाः कुरुपुंगवाःtvadīyāḥ kurupuṃgavāḥyour finest Kurus; your bull-like Kurus
तेन मुक्ताः रणे राजन्tena muktāḥ raṇe rājanloosed by him in battle, O king; shot by him upon the field
शराः शत्रुनिबर्हणाःśarāḥ śatrunibarhaṇāḥarrows destroying enemies; arrows crushing opponents
क्षत्रियान् अनयन् शूरान्kṣatriyān anayan śūrānled the heroic kshatriyas; carried away the brave warriors
प्रेतराजनिवेशनम्pretarājaniveśanamto the abode of the king of the dead; to the dwelling of Yama
यमदण्डोपमान् घोरान्yamadaṇḍopamān ghorānterrible, like the rod of Yama; dreadful as the staff of death
ज्वलनाशीविषोपमान्jvalanāśīviṣopamānlike fire and serpent venom; as if flame and poison
सौभद्रः समरे क्रुद्धःsaubhadraḥ samare kruddhaḥSaubhadra, enraged in battle; the furious Abhimanyu
प्रेषयाम् आस सायकान्preṣayām āsa sāyakānsent forth arrows; loosed his shafts
रथिनम् च रथात् तूर्णम्rathinam ca rathāt tūrṇamand swiftly cast the charioteer-warrior from his chariot; the ratha-warrior from his ratha
हयपृष्ठात् च सादिनम्hayapṛṣṭhāt ca sādinamand the horseman from his horse's back; the rider from the horse's back
गजारोहान् च सगजान्gajārohān ca sagajānand elephant-riders together with their elephants; the drivers along with their elephants
पातयाम् आस फाल्गुनिःpātayām āsa phālguniḥPhalguni's son struck down; the son of Arjuna cast down
तस्य तत् कुर्वतः कर्मtasya tat kurvataḥ karmaas he performed this deed; while he was accomplishing this feat
महत् संख्ये अद्भुतम्mahat saṃkhye adbhutamgreat and wondrous in battle; great and marvelous in combat
नृपाः पूजयाम् चक्रिरेnṛpāḥ pūjayām cakrirethe kings were delighted; the lords honored him
हृष्टाः प्रशशंसुः चhṛṣṭāḥ praśaśaṃsuḥ cajoyful, they praised; rejoicing, they extolled
फाल्गुनिम्phālgunimPhalguni; the son of Arjuna
तानि अनीकानि सौभद्रःtāni anīkāni saubhadraḥthose divisions, Saubhadra; these forces, Abhimanyu
द्रावयन् बहु अशोभतdrāvayan bahu aśobhatascattering them, shone brightly; dispersing them, blazed radiantly
तूलराशिम् इव आधूयtūlarāśim iva ādhūyaas if shaking a mass of cotton; as though scattering a heap of cotton
मारुतः सर्वतोदिशम्mārutaḥ sarvatodiśamthe wind in every direction; by the wind everywhere
तेन विद्राव्यमाणानिtena vidrāvyamāṇāniscattered by him; dispersed by him
तव सैन्यानि भारतtava sainyāni bhāratayour armies, O Bharata; your forces
त्रातारम् न अध्यगच्छन्तtrātāram na adhyagacchantafound no protector; obtained no savior
पङ्के मग्नाः इव द्विपाःpaṅke magnāḥ iva dvipāḥlike elephants sunk in mud; as if elephants in a mire
विद्राव्य सर्वसैन्यानिvidrāvya sarvasainyānihaving scattered all the forces; having dispersed all the armies
तावकानि नरोत्तमःtāvakāni narottamaḥyours, O best of men; belonging to you
अभिमन्युः स्थितः राजन्abhimanyuḥ sthitaḥ rājanAbhimanyu stood, O king; Abhimanyu came to a stop
विधूमः अग्निः इव ज्वलन्vidhūmaḥ agniḥ iva jvalanblazing like a smokeless fire; shining as a smokeless flame
न च एनम् तावकाः सर्वेna ca enam tāvakāḥ sarveand him, all of yours, could not; and all your men could not
विषेहुः अरिघातिनम्viṣehuḥ arighātinamwithstand the destroyer of foes; stand against the slayer of enemies
प्रदीप्तम् पावकम् यद्वत्pradīptam pāvakam yadvatas a blazing fire; as a fire that has flared up
पतंगाः कालचोदिताःpataṃgāḥ kālacoditāḥmoths driven by time; insects drawn by death
अनुवाद

Sanjaya said: 'Abhimanyu, majestic upon his chariot, radiant, mounted on superb bay horses, charged against the great army of Duryodhana, scattering showers of arrows as a cloud pours down streams of rain. In battle your finest Kurus could not even restrain the enraged Saubhadra, destroyer of foes, as he plunged like a torrent of weapons into the inexhaustible ocean of the army. The arrows he loosed upon the field, O king, destroyed the enemy and led brave kshatriyas away to the abode of the king of the dead. The enraged Saubhadra, in the fight, sent forth arrows terrible as the rod of Yama, like fire and serpent venom. The son of Phalguna swiftly cast riders down from their chariots, horsemen from their horses' backs, and elephant-riders together with their elephants. As he performed this great and wondrous feat in battle, the kings rejoiced, honored the son of Arjuna, and praised him. Scattering these divisions, Saubhadra shone brightly, like the wind scattering a heap of cotton in every direction. Your armies, O Bharata, driven before him, found no protector, like elephants sunk in a mire. Having scattered all your armies, Abhimanyu, best of men, stood, O king, blazing like a smokeless fire. And none of your men could withstand this destroyer of foes, just as moths driven by time cannot endure a blazing fire.'
