When the tenth day arrived, Bhishma, with sharp arrows, burned Shikhandi's chariot force as fire burns a forest. Then Shikhandi pierced him with three arrows between the breasts, as though striking an enraged venomous serpent, like Antaka sent forth by Kala. Deeply pierced by these arrows, Bhishma looked at Shikhandi and, though enraged, was unwilling to fight; smiling, he said this: 'Shoot if you wish, or do not — I will not fight you in any way. Whatever the Creator made you, that same you remain, Shikhandini.' Hearing these words, Shikhandi, blinded by wrath, licking the corners of his mouth, said to Bhishma in the battle: 'I know you, mighty-armed one, destroyer of kshatriyas. I have heard of your battle with Jamadagnya's son, and I have heard many times of this divine power of yours. Yet knowing your power, I shall fight with you today, doing what is dear to the Pandavas and to myself, best of men. Today, hero, I shall make you fight in battle; I shall surely kill you — I swear this by truth before you. Having heard my words, do as you think fitting. Shoot if you wish, or not, but you shall not escape me alive. Look well upon this world, Bhishma, conqueror of battles.' Having spoken thus, he then, O king, struck Bhishma — already wounded by arrows of words — with five curved shafts in the battle.

Shikhandi steps forward not as a chance shield but as the bearer of a long-awaited resolution. Bhishma keeps his vow, Shikhandi asserts his right to fight, and the tension passes from words into arrows.
