प्रवर्तमाने तु पुनर् महाहवे; विगाह्यमानासु चमूषु पार्थिवैः ॥
अथाब्रवीद् धर्षकरं वचस् तदा; रथर्षभान् सर्वमहारथर्षभः ॥
कर्ण उवाच
जगत्य् अनित्ये सततं प्रधावति; प्रचिन्तयन्न् अस्थिरम् अद्य लक्षये ॥
भवत्सु तिष्ठत्स्व् इह पातितो रणे; गिरिप्रकाशः कुरुपुंगवः कथम् ॥
निपातिते शांतनवे महारथे; दिवाकरे भूतलम् आस्थिते यथा ॥
न पार्थिवाः सोढुम् अलं धनंजयं; गिरिप्रवोढारम् इवानिलं द्रुमाः ॥

nipātite śāṃtanave mahārathe; divākare bhūtalam āsthite yathā ||
na pārthivāḥ soḍhum alaṃ dhanaṃjayaṃ; giripravoḍhāram ivānilaṃ drumāḥ ||
When the great battle began anew and the armies, [led] by the kings, were plunging [into the fray], then Karna, the bull among all the great chariot-warriors, spoke a heartening word to the bulls among chariot-warriors: 'Reflecting on the unsteady in this impermanent world, ever hurtling [toward its end], I now perceive [its instability]: while you stand here alive, how could the mountain-like chief of the Kurus [Bhishma] have been struck down in battle? Now that Shantanava, the great chariot-warrior, has fallen — like the sun descended to the earth — the kings cannot withstand Dhananjaya [Arjuna], as trees cannot withstand the wind that tears down mountains.'

Karna begins with a truth about impermanence — 'the world is ceaselessly hurtling toward its end' — but turns it not toward renunciation but toward rousing his warriors: even the mountain-like Bhishma has fallen, so take heart and fight. The images of the sun descended to earth and the wind that tears down mountains convey the shock to the ranks: with the fall of that light, the whole day of war has darkened, while Arjuna's strength is shown to be irresistible, like a storm to trees. It is telling that here the insight into impermanence serves not peace but renewed battle — wisdom about death, not brought to dharma, only spurs men on to war. The verse teaches that the same knowledge of impermanence can lead either to peace or to hardening of heart — depending on where it turns the heart.
