देवनागरी
द्रोणेन त्व् एवम् उक्तस्य तव पुत्रस्य भारत ॥
सहसा निःसृतो भावो यो ऽस्य नित्यं प्रवर्तते ॥
नाकारो गूहितुं शक्यो बृहस्पतिसमैर् अपि ॥
तस्मात् तव सुतो राजन् प्रहृष्टो वाक्यम् अब्रवीत् ॥

nākāro gūhituṃ śakyo bṛhaspatisamair api ||

But when Drona had spoken thus to your son, O Bharata, there suddenly burst forth the true feeling that ever lives unchangingly within him. One's inner nature cannot be hidden even by those equal to Brihaspati; and so your son, O king, gladdened, spoke this word.

"One's nature cannot be hidden even by those equal to Brihaspati" -- a deep truth: what lives constantly in the heart sooner or later breaks into the open, for pretense is short-lived while nature is unstoppable. Duryodhana could not sustain Drona's noble interpretation and revealed his true, self-serving aim. It is telling that he "was gladdened" in doing so: evil delights in revealing itself when it believes its scheme has succeeded. The verse teaches that a hidden impulse inevitably shows itself in word and deed; that no wisdom will long conceal a person's true nature; and that a person betrays himself unwittingly wherever his cherished desire is touched -- for out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks.
