For Drona has promised [my capture] with a proviso, O destroyer of foes; and that proviso he has placed upon you, who never miss. Therefore you, O mighty-armed one, fight today beside me, so that Duryodhana may not obtain this [his own] desire from Drona.

Yudhishthira is neither afraid nor angry, but soberly resolves upon a "course of action": the righteous man meets a threat not with panic but with prudent arrangement. He has discerned the most vulnerable point in the enemy's design — the condition "if Arjuna should withdraw" — and turns it into a defense, bidding Arjuna to stay close. Thus the wisdom of defense lies in not letting oneself be parted from one's protector. The verse teaches that the wise man turns the very condition of an enemy's scheme into the foundation of his own defense; that the vigilance of the righteous consists not in fear but in sober calculation; and that the safety of the one who is protected lies in staying inseparable from the one who is his bulwark.
