स शब्दः प्रदिशः सर्वा दिशः खं च समावृणोत् ॥
आवृतत्वाच् च लोकस्य नासीत् तत्र प्रतिस्वनः ॥
अतीव संप्रहृष्टांस् तान् उपलभ्य धनंजयः ॥
किं चिद् अभ्युत्स्मयन् कृष्णम् इदं वचनम् अब्रवीत् ॥

āvṛtatvāc ca lokasya nāsīt tatra pratisvanaḥ ||

kiṃ cid abhyutsmayan kṛṣṇam idaṃ vacanam abravīt ||

अनुवाद
That shout filled all the intermediate quarters, all the directions of space, and the sky; and because the whole expanse was thus covered, no echo could arise there. Noticing them rejoicing beyond measure, Dhananjaya, with a faint smile, spoke this word to Krishna.

The noise fills the expanse so completely that there is nowhere for an echo to be born — a reverberation is possible only where there remains open space for sound to return to. The image runs deep: fullness leaves no room for a response. And Arjuna's smile at the sight of his exulting enemies is not the mockery of arrogance but the bitter insight of one who sees further: they rejoice in their own destruction, not knowing that their delight is the delight of men marching to death. It is telling that the warrior who is about to slay them meets them not with malice but with an almost compassionate smile. The verse teaches that true strength is calm and clear-sighted, while the doomed are loud and blind to their fate.
