tataḥ karṇo jayaprepsur mānī sarvadhanurbhṛtām ||

so 'strair astravidāṃ śreṣṭho rāmaśiṣyaḥ pratāpavān ||
samare śatrudurdharṣam abhimanyum apīḍayat ||
No one then could turn him back from Drona in the battle, as he crushed the finest chariot-warriors like the Thunderbolt-bearer crushing the asuras. Then Karna, longing for victory, proud, foremost among all bowmen, struck the son of Subhadra with hundreds of arrows, displaying his supreme weapon-spells. He, the foremost among knowers of weapons, the disciple of Rama, valiant, pressed Abhimanyu, unassailable to his foes, hard in battle with his weapon-spells.

To stop the boy, it took Karna — 'foremost among knowers of weapons, disciple of Parashurama': only the fiercest of the fierce could stand against a child. Here is the highest measure of Abhimanyu's glory: no one but the first among bowmen can hold him back. It is telling that the boy is likened to Indra crushing the asuras — a divine image. The verse teaches that such is the boy's valor that the mightiest of men must be sent against it, and he alone can press it back; that the measure of a warrior's greatness lies in who must be dispatched against him; and that Abhimanyu, whom none but Karna, disciple of Parashurama, could stop, thereby won a glory that even his coming death will not diminish — for no one could honestly overcome him.
