The blazing fire turned to the left, emitting blue, red, and dark-crimson flames separately. At sunrise and sunset, the sun in that city was seen more than once by men surrounded by headless phantoms. In the kitchens, when the carefully prepared food, O Bharata, was served, worms appeared in it, O lord of men. When the auspicious word was proclaimed and great-souled men offered their prayers, the sound of rushing was heard, yet no one was to be seen.

The very sources of purity are defiled: the sacrificial fire turns to the left, worms appear in wholesome food, and when the sacred word is uttered unseen presences dart about. Thus it is made manifest that when dharma is trampled in the heart, rite and element and meal are likewise defiled. The fire turning 'to the left' and worms in pure provisions are signs that creation itself recoils from the doomed clan. The verse teaches that inner impiety defiles outward sanctity as well: where dharma is violated, fire and food and prayer lose their purity; and that moral dissolution corrupts even the sacred itself, for rite without purity of heart becomes a dwelling-place not of grace but of uncleanness.
