स केशवं योगयुक्तं शयानं; मृगाशङ्की लुब्धकः सायकेन ॥
जराविध्यत् पादतले त्वरावांस्; तं चाभितस् तज् जिघृक्षुर् जगाम ॥
अथापश्यत् पुरुषं योगयुक्तं; पीताम्बरं लुब्धको ऽनेकबाहुम् ॥
मत्वात्मानम् अपराद्धं स तस्य; जग्राह पादौ शिरसा चार्तरूपः ॥
आश्वासयत् तं महात्मा तदानीं; गच्छन्न् ऊर्ध्वं रोदसी व्याप्य लक्ष्म्या ॥

jarāvidhyat pādatale tvarāvāṃs; taṃ cābhitas taj jighṛkṣur jagāma ||
athāpaśyat puruṣaṃ yogayuktaṃ; pītāmbaraṃ lubdhako 'nekabāhum ||
matvātmānam aparāddhaṃ sa tasya; jagrāha pādau śirasā cārtarūpaḥ ||
āśvāsayat taṃ mahātmā tadānīṃ; gacchann ūrdhvaṃ rodasī vyāpya lakṣmyā ||
Mistaking Keshava, lying there absorbed in yoga, for a deer, the hunter Jara hastily pierced the sole of his foot with an arrow and drew near, wishing to seize his quarry. He then beheld a man absorbed in yoga, clad in yellow garments, with many arms. Overwhelmed with grief and deeming himself to have sinned against him, he clasped his feet with his head. The great-souled one consoled him then, and, ascending on high, filled heaven and earth with radiance.

The hunter's arrow piercing the sole of the foot is but the outward occasion of the departure: the Supreme, many-armed, robed in yellow, is invulnerable, and His "death" is an ascent that fills heaven and earth with radiance. Wondrous is His grace: rather than punishing the simple hunter who falls in terror at His feet, the Lord bestows consolation — His last earthly act revealing compassion toward the unwitting instrument of His passing. Thus even the inadvertent agent of His departure becomes not cursed but blessed. The verse teaches that the Supreme cannot be slain, and that His visible end is His luminous return to Himself; and that the boundless mercy of the Lord extends even to the one whose hand became the instrument of His departure, for He meets with consolation and grace — not with retribution — everyone who in repentance falls at His feet.
