देवनागरी
नेत्रस्थं जाग्रतं विद्यात्कण्ठे स्वप्नं विनिर्दिशेत् । सुषुप्तं हृदयस्थं तु तुरीयं मूर्ध्नि संस्थितम्

अनुवाद
Let him know waking in the eye, let him assign dream to the throat, deep sleep to the heart; and the fourth is set in the crown.

A schedule of the four states by places of the body, and it differs from the one the second section of this same book gave.
There the places were navel, heart, throat and crown; here — eye, throat, heart, crown.
Such divergence is usual in śruti, and I will not smooth it over: different schools counted differently, and the book has preserved both schedules.
What they share is the crown for the fourth and the throat for dream.
Note why waking is in the eye: awake, consciousness goes out through sight, and the Bṛhadāraṇyaka says plainly that “the puruṣa in the right eye” is the waking one.
And deep sleep is in the heart, because there, by those same books, the senses withdraw when all grows still.
The fourth, however, is not “in the body”: the crown is an exit, not a place. We read of the same in the fortieth section of the Atharvaśiras, where the breath pressed “upward from the brain”.
The next verse will give the most unexpected definition of the sandhyā.
