A mapping begins that, in later Vedānta, is called sapta-vidhā caitanya, "sevenfold consciousness," and is set out in textbooks such as the Vedānta-paribhāṣā. The seven are named thus: pure consciousness; the consciousness of the Lord; the consciousness of the soul; the knower; the measure; the knowable; the fruit of knowledge. One and the same consciousness, it is said, appears sevenfold, depending on what it is joined to.
This mapping is not revelation but school-work, and it is worth calling it exactly that. It is an analysis of how cognition is structured: who knows, by what one knows, what is known, and what comes of it. It is a sound analysis, and anyone who has studied epistemology will find here what is familiar.
It is worth noting, however, that in this list Īśvara and jīva stand separately, as two distinct members. Let the school explain right away that this distinction is conventional; still, on paper they are listed apart and distinguished by a mark, not merely by appearance — and the following verses will say by exactly which. The Vaiṣṇava side does not object to the analysis itself: cognition truly is structured this way. She objects to what follows — the declaration that all seven are one; but we will examine that in its place.
