सैषा गणेशविद्या । गणक ऋषिः । निचृद्गायत्री छन्दः । श्रीमहागणपतिर्देवता । ओं गं गणपतये नमः

This indeed is the knowledge of Gaṇeśa. Gaṇaka is the seer, nicṛd-gāyatrī the meter, Śrī Mahā-Gaṇapati the deity. Oṃ gaṃ gaṇapataye namaḥ.

The viniyoga, "application," is given — the obligatory preface to every mantra, consisting of three items of information: who is the seer, in what meter it is composed, to what deity it is addressed. All three deserve examination, for together they form a structure worth pondering. The ṛṣi, "seer," is the one to whom the mantra was revealed. Note the word: not the composer, but the one who saw; the whole of Indian literature on the sacred insists that mantras are not composed but perceived, as one perceives what already exists.
Chandas, "meter," indicates the form: the mantra is measured speech, not arbitrary. Nicṛd-gāyatrī is a variant of the gāyatrī with a shortened foot. Devatā, "deity," indicates to whom it is addressed.
It is on this third point that we should pause, for it is, to my mind, the weightiest thing that can be said about mantra in general. By the Indian reckoning every mantra has an addressee, and without the indication of an addressee it is not considered fit for use. Not "the mantra works" — but "the mantra is addressed to such-and-such"; and at the very foundation of ritual language, then, lies a relation to a person, not the action of a force.
The conclusion for our discussion follows of itself and deserves to be stated. A teaching that erases distinction is compelled to consider every devatā a concession to the incapable; but then the whole of ritual practice turns out to be a concession, for no mantra is uttered without a deity. The Vaiṣṇava side need reinterpret nothing here: it accepts the viniyoga as it stands. There is one who speaks; there are words; there is the One to whom they are addressed; and all three are present from the very start.
