दत्त्वा च ददतां श्रेष्ठो दिवम् आचक्रमे ततः ॥

ajāyata sutaḥ karṇaḥ sarvalokeṣu viśrutaḥ ||
prādāc ca tasyāḥ kanyātvaṃ punaḥ sa paramadyutiḥ ||
dattvā ca dadatāṃ śreṣṭho divam ācakrame tataḥ ||
"Tapana, radiant in his deeds, then placed in her a seed; then she bore a hero, the best of all bearers of weapons — clad in armor, glorious, a god's child, wrapped in splendor. Bearing an innate armor, his face lit by earrings, was born the son Karna, renowned in all the worlds. And that most radiant god again restored to her maidenhood; and, having given, the best of givers then ascended to heaven."

Here Karna is born — with an innate armor (kavaca) and earrings (kundala), signs of his divine origin and invulnerability. These armaments are telling: given from birth, they make him almost invulnerable — and it is precisely these that Indra will lure from him to save Arjuna. Thus already at the very moment of birth the knot of the hero's future ruin is woven. Telling too is the mercy of Surya: he restores Kunti's maidenhood, sparing her from disgrace — a god does not destroy but preserves the honor of the one who summoned him. Here is both the greatness and the tragedy of Karna: son of the Sun-god, endowed with beauty and invulnerability, born in secret and destined to be disowned by his mother. It is telling that Surya is called "the best of givers" — and this trait, generosity, will pass to the son, becoming Karna's most famous virtue. Thus the scripture reveals the hero's birth, marking from the very start both the gift of his greatness and the seed of his doom.
