Here Pandu mourns the sage he has killed "as a kinsman." It is telling that he grieves not over the punishment threatening himself but over the life he has destroyed: a noble heart sorrows first over the harm it has caused, rather than over its own fate. This is the beginning of true repentance -- not fear of punishment but contrition for sin. Thus scripture opens the story of Pandu's renunciation with tears of remorse, out of which his resolve to leave the world will grow.
