स्वर्गपारं तितीर्षन् स शतशृङ्गाद् उदङ्मुखः ॥

महानदीनितम्बांश् च दुर्गांश् च गिरिगह्वरान् ॥
सन्ति नित्यहिमा देशा निर्वृक्षमृगपक्षिणः ॥
सन्ति के चिन् महावर्षा दुर्गाः के चिद् दुरासदाः ॥
अतिक्रामेन् न पक्षी यान् कुत एवेतरे मृगाः ॥
वायुर् एको ऽतिगाद् यत्र सिद्धाश् च परमर्षयः ॥
गच्छन्त्यौ शैलराजे ऽस्मिन् राजपुत्र्यौ कथं त्व् इमे ॥
न सीदेताम् अदुःखार्हे मा गमो भरतर्षभ ॥

vāyur eko 'tigād yatra siddhāś ca paramarṣayaḥ ||
gacchantyau śailarāje 'smin rājaputryau kathaṃ tv ime ||
na sīdetām aduḥkhārhe mā gamo bharatarṣabha ||
"Wishing to cross to the far shore of heaven, he, from Shatashringa, turning north, set out on the journey with both wives; but as he went ever higher along the king of mountains, the ascetics there said: 'We have seen many impassable regions of this mountain, become playgrounds of the gods, gandharvas, and apsaras, the gardens of Kubera, both level and uneven, the slopes of great rivers and impassable ravines. There are lands of eternal snow, without trees, beasts, or birds; there are places of great rains, some impassable, others unapproachable; which not even a bird can cross — how then could other beasts? — where only the wind, the siddhas, and the greatest sages pass. How, then, could these two princesses, undeserving of suffering, not perish, going along this king of mountains? Do not go, O bull of the Bharatas.'"

Here the ascetics restrain Pandu from ascending to inaccessible heights. The king's aspiration "to cross to the far shore of heaven" (svarga-pāra) is telling: even in austerity he is drawn ever higher, toward the very gates of the heavenly world. Here lies both the dignity and the limit of such striving: longing for heaven is praiseworthy, but the heaven attained through austerity is not the highest goal — it is temporary, and beyond it lies something still higher, the abode of the Lord. Also telling is the ascetics' concern for the tender princesses: the saints are compassionate and prudent, not approving of austerity bound up with needless suffering for one's loved ones. Thus the scripture prepares a turn in the conversation: halted in his ascent, Pandu turns to another concern — offspring, without which, by his own conviction, heaven itself is closed to him.
