Here Kunti, having agreed, proceeds to the sacred rite. Her actions are telling: "so be it," the bow, the leave granted, the pradakshina (circumambulation keeping the honored one to the right) — all display reverence and ritual purity. It can be seen that even this unusual undertaking is performed by her not boldly but reverently, as a sacred act. It is telling that she proceeds only "given leave" by her husband — in full accord and obedience. Thus scripture, concluding the couple's conversation, leads to the very mystery of the summoning of the god: what Kunti is about to do is not self-will nor sin, but an act sanctified by consent, by rite, and by purity, from which the first righteous Pandava will be born. The following chapter will reveal the descent of the god Dharma and the birth of Yudhishthira.
