यौ तु माद्री महेष्वासाव् असूत कुरुसत्तमौ ॥

चरता धर्मनित्येन वनवासं यशस्विना ॥
एष पैतामहो वंशः पाण्डुना पुनर् उद्धृतः ॥
पुत्राणां जन्म वृद्धिं च वैदिकाध्ययनानि च ॥
पश्यतः सततं पाण्डोः शश्वत् प्रीतिर् अवर्धत ॥
वर्तमानः सतां वृत्ते पुत्रलाभम् अवाप्य च ॥
पितृलोकं गतः पाण्डुर् इतः सप्तदशे ऽहनि ॥
yau tu mādrī maheṣvāsāv asūta kurusattamau ||
aśvibhyāṃ manujavyāghrāv imau tāv api tiṣṭhataḥ ||
caratā dharmanityena vanavāsaṃ yaśasvinā ||
eṣa paitāmaho vaṃśaḥ pāṇḍunā punar uddhṛtaḥ ||
putrāṇāṃ janma vṛddhiṃ ca vaidikādhyayanāni ca ||
paśyataḥ satataṃ pāṇḍoḥ śaśvat prītir avardhata ||
vartamānaḥ satāṃ vṛtte putralābham avāpya ca ||
pitṛlokaṃ gataḥ pāṇḍur itaḥ saptadaśe 'hani ||
"'And those two great archers, foremost of the Kurus, whom Madri bore from the two Ashvins — these two tigers among men stand here as well. Wandering in forest life, constant in dharma, glorious, Pandu once again raised up this ancestral lineage; and seeing continually the birth of his sons, their growth, and their Vedic study, Pandu's joy grew ever greater. Abiding in the conduct of the righteous, and having attained sons, Pandu departed to the world of the ancestors on the seventeenth day.'"

Here the sage concludes the account of the Pandavas and Pandu. Telling is that Pandu is called "constant in dharma" and "abiding in the conduct of the righteous": the sages honor the memory of the deceased, not darkening the memory of him with his final fall, but glorifying his entire righteous life. Here is the mercy of the righteous toward the departed: of the dead, the good is remembered, and a single lapse does not efface a lifetime's labor. Telling too is that Pandu's joy is named as something specifically spiritual — the birth, growth, and Vedic learning of his sons: a father's highest delight lies not in his children's wealth but in their piety and learning. Thus scripture sums up the life of Pandu — restorer of the lineage, whose final joy was in righteous sons — and entrusts them to the care of the family.
