Vaishampayana said: 'Having understood that wish of Dhritarashtra, and aware of his own helplessness, Yudhishthira answered him: "So be it." Then to the wise Bhishma, and to the highly wise Vidura, and to Drona, and to Bahlika, and to Somadatta the Kaurava, and to Kripa, and to the teacher's son, and to the illustrious Gandhari, Yudhishthira, quietly, sorrowful, then said: "In the beautiful, populous city of Varanavata we shall dwell with our retinue, O honored ones, by the command of Dhritarashtra. May all of you, with a clear heart, utter blessed words; may evil not overcome us, exalted by your blessings."'

Here the wisdom and humility of Yudhishthira in adversity reveal themselves. It is telling that he 'understood Dhritarashtra's wish' -- that is, he discerned the ill intent -- and yet consented, 'aware of his own helplessness': the righteous man, deprived of support, does not rebel in vain but submits to his elder, entrusting the outcome to dharma. Here is high forbearance (titiksha) and respect for elders even in their wrongdoing: Yudhishthira does not resist the order, yet is not careless either. His request for blessings is telling: knowing he goes to meet danger, he seeks protection not in weapons but in the blessed words of the righteous -- 'evil will not overcome those exalted by blessings.' In this is faith in the protective power of blessing and dharma: the righteous man enters danger armed not with a sword but with the blessing of his elders and trust in the Supreme. Thus the scripture shows the image of the wise in adversity: to discern evil, to submit humbly to the inevitable, and to seek protection in dharma.
