तांस् तथावादिनः पौरान् दुःखितान् दुःखकर्शितः ॥
उवाच परमप्रीतो धर्मराजो युधिष्ठिरः ॥
पिता मान्यो गुरुः श्रेष्ठो यद् आह पृथिवीपतिः ॥
अशङ्कमानैस् तत् कार्यम् अस्माभिर् इति नो व्रतम् ॥
भवन्तः सुहृदो ऽस्माकम् अस्मान् कृत्वा प्रदक्षिणम् ॥
आशीर्भिर् अभिनन्द्यास्मान् निवर्तध्वं यथागृहम् ॥
यदा तु कार्यम् अस्माकं भवद्भिर् उपपत्स्यते ॥
तदा करिष्यथ मम प्रियाणि च हितानि च ॥
ते तथेति प्रतिज्ञाय कृत्वा चैतान् प्रदक्षिणम् ॥
आशीर्भिर् अभिनन्द्यैनाञ् जग्मुर् नगरम् एव हि ॥

yadā tu kāryam asmākaṃ bhavadbhir upapatsyate ||
tadā kariṣyatha mama priyāṇi ca hitāni ca ||
te tatheti pratijñāya kṛtvā caitān pradakṣiṇam ||
āśīrbhir abhinandyaināñ jagmur nagaram eva hi ||
"To those grieving townsfolk, himself worn with grief, the king of dharma Yudhishthira, deeply moved, said: 'A father, worthy of honor, a teacher, the highest — what the lord of the earth says, that we must do without hesitation; such is our vow. You, our friends, having circumambulated us and cheered us with your blessings, return to your homes; and when a task of ours arises for you to fulfill, then you will do what is dear and beneficial to me.' They, saying 'so be it', having circumambulated them and cheered them with blessings, returned to the city."

Here Yudhishthira shows a model of reverence toward elders even in their wrongdoing. Telling are his words: "what the lord [Dhritarashtra] says — that we must do without hesitation": he honors his uncle as a father and teacher, obeying him even while perceiving his evil design. Here is the high dharma of obedience to elders, yet also a fine line: Yudhishthira submits in what is not in itself a direct sin (to go to the city), entrusting the outcome to dharma — this is not blind indulgence of evil, but the patience of the righteous. Telling too is his care for the people: he does not incite those who love him to rebellion, but gently sends them away, preserving peace. In this is the wisdom of non-malice: not to multiply strife, not to take revenge, but to endure and to trust. Thus the scripture reveals the greatness of Yudhishthira — in humility, freedom from malice, and concern for others even in the hour of his own misfortune.
