वैशंपायन उवाच
तांस् तु दृष्ट्वा सुमनसः परिसंवत्सरोषितान् ॥
विश्वस्तान् इव संलक्ष्य हर्षं चक्रे पुरोचनः ॥
पुरोचने तथा हृष्टे कौन्तेयो ऽथ युधिष्ठिरः ॥
भीमसेनार्जुनौ चैव यमौ चोवाच धर्मवित् ॥
अस्मान् अयं सुविश्वस्तान् वेत्ति पापः पुरोचनः ॥
वञ्चितो ऽयं नृशंसात्मा कालं मन्ये पलायने ॥
आयुधागारम् आदीप्य दग्ध्वा चैव पुरोचनम् ॥
षट् प्राणिनो निधायेह द्रवामो ऽनभिलक्षिताः ॥

vañcito 'yaṃ nṛśaṃsātmā kālaṃ manye palāyane ||
āyudhāgāram ādīpya dagdhvā caiva purocanam ||
ṣaṭ prāṇino nidhāyeha dravāmo 'nabhilakṣitāḥ ||
Vaishampayana said: "Seeing them cheerful, having lived out a whole year, and deeming them trustful, Purochana rejoiced. When Purochana had thus rejoiced, Yudhishthira, the knower of dharma, said to Bhimasena, Arjuna, and the twins." Yudhishthira said: "This wicked Purochana thinks us wholly trustful; the cruel-hearted man is deceived — the time, I think, has come to flee. Setting the armory ablaze and burning Purochana, and leaving six bodies here, let us flee unnoticed."

Here the deceiver is himself deceived — and in this lies the knot of retribution. It is telling that Purochana rejoices exactly when he is most surely doomed: lulled by the feigned ease of his victims, he does not know that the trap he set will turn against him. The law of karma is at work here: whoever digs a pit for another falls into it himself, and the villain perishes by his own instrument. Telling too is Yudhishthira's resolve: having waited for the hour, he acts without hesitation — the patience of the righteous is crowned by timely action. So the scripture shows a turning point: a year of patience and cunning bears fruit, and the murderers' own scheme becomes their ruin.
