Here the victor humbly asks the vanquished the reason for his own vulnerability. It is telling that Arjuna, having overcome his foe, does not boast but seeks to learn: the wise draw a lesson from every occasion. Here is the humility of the truly strong -- he is ready to learn where he had been unsound. Thus the scripture shows that even victory does not remove the need to learn; and Arjuna's question opens the way to a teaching about the protection that piety provides.
