Here a mother fears making her own word false. It is significant that Kunti is troubled not merely by propriety, but by the thought that her speech might turn out untrue: for the righteous, a word is sacred, and to break what has been said is sin. Here is shown how a devout heart cherishes truthfulness: even a word spoken unwittingly the mother is ready to honor as a vow. Thus the text reveals a reverence for the truth of speech; and Kunti's concern is not for appearances, but that even her accidental word should not become a lie.
