वैशंपायन उवाच
ततः सागरसंकाशं दृष्ट्वा नृपतिसागरम् ॥
रोषात् प्रचलितं सर्वम् इदम् आह युधिष्ठिरः ॥
भीष्मं मतिमतां श्रेष्ठं वृद्धं कुरुपितामहम् ॥
बृहस्पतिं बृहत्तेजाः पुरुहूत इवारिहा ॥
असौ रोषात् प्रचलितो महान् नृपतिसागरः ॥
अत्र यत् प्रतिपत्तव्यं तन् मे ब्रूहि पितामह ॥
यज्ञस्य च न विघ्नः स्यात् प्रजानां च शिवं भवेत् ॥
यथा सर्वत्र तत् सर्वं ब्रूहि मे ऽद्य पितामह ॥

asau roṣāt pracalito mahān nṛpatisāgaraḥ ||
atra yat pratipattavyaṃ tan me brūhi pitāmaha ||
yajñasya ca na vighnaḥ syāt prajānāṃ ca śivaṃ bhavet ||
yathā sarvatra tat sarvaṃ brūhi me 'dya pitāmaha ||
Then, seeing the ocean of kings, like a raging ocean, all stirred up with wrath, Yudhishthira — himself blazing with splendor like Brihaspati, like Puruhuta [Indra], slayer of foes — said to Bhishma, best of the wise, the elder, grandsire of the Kurus: "This great ocean of kings has been stirred up with wrath; tell me, O grandsire, what should be done here, so that the sacrifice may not be hindered and the subjects may prosper. How all this should be arranged everywhere — tell me now, O grandsire."

In his anxiety Yudhishthira thinks not of himself but of two things: that 'the sacrifice not be hindered' and that 'the subjects prosper.' It is significant that even in danger the righteous king is concerned with the preservation of the sacred rite and the welfare of the people, not his own safety. And though lord over all, he again turns for counsel to his elder. The verse teaches that a true ruler, in a moment of turmoil, seeks not how to protect himself but how to protect the Lord's work and the people entrusted to him; and that the wisdom of asking counsel from the worthiest does not leave him even at the summit of power. Care for the sacrifice and for the people — this is the measure of a righteous heart under threat.
