ऐडांश् चैलान् वार्षदंशाञ्aiḍāṃś cailān vārṣadaṃśāñ“Sheepskins, garments, [furs] of varshadamsha,
जातरूप-परिष्कृतान्jātarūpa-pariṣkṛtāntrimmed with gold,
प्रावार-अजिन-मुख्यांश् चprāvāra-ajina-mukhyāṃś caand the finest cloaks and hides
काम्बोजः प्रददौ वसुkāmbojaḥ pradadau vasuKamboja gave [as] wealth;
अश्वांस् तित्तिरि-कल्माषांस्aśvāṃs tittiri-kalmāṣāṃshorses of tittiri-kalmasha colour,

Even the brahmins bring tribute ‘for the pleasure of Dharmaraja’ — not out of fear, but out of love. It is telling that those who come to Yudhishthira are drawn by affection: his righteousness itself gathers gifts, as a flower gathers bees. The verse teaches that tribute to a righteous king is not a forced levy but a joyful offering; where power rests on dharma, tribute becomes an expression of reverence rather than a burden. But Duryodhana's envious eye sees, even in this willing love of the peoples, nothing but a heap of another's goods. The very same thing is, for one, evidence of righteousness, and for another, mere plunder to be reckoned; everything depends on the heart of the beholder.
