प्रावर्तत महाराज सुहृद्द्यूतम् अनन्तरम् ॥

That hall shone, O king, with those kings who had gathered, like the vault of heaven with the most fortunate gods assembled there. All [of them] were knowers of the Veda, heroes, all of radiant form; and at once the "friendly" game began, O great king.

The hall shines like heaven with gods — the splendor of the assembly on the threshold of wrongdoing. The bitter word "friendly game" is telling: the name of goodwill, in a deed of treachery, is repeated once more, like a seal of hypocrisy. The verse teaches that outward splendor and decorous names do not sanctify the substance: beneath the shining hall and the word "friendship," betrayal is ripening. And the comparison to gods in the vault of heaven throws the fall into relief: an assembly resembling the heavens turns into a spectacle of wrong. Where splendor cloaks evil, the darkness is only the more visible; and the more solemn the setting of lawlessness, the louder the trampled dharma cries out.
