Having reached the summit of triumph, Duryodhana orders the queen brought to sweep the chambers "with the maidservants." Striking is the malice with which he hastens to degrade her: winning is not enough for him -- he must also trample her dignity. The verse teaches that a base soul reveals itself fully in victory: triumph strips away its last veneer of decency. And the command to honest Vidura -- to become the instrument of this disgrace -- is a double insolence: harnessing truth to the service of falsehood. One who, having prevailed, rushes to grind the defeated into the dust shows not strength but spite; and joy that seeks its nourishment in another's humiliation is the surest sign of corruption.
