कुन्ती च भृशसंतप्ता द्रौपदीं प्रेक्ष्य गच्छतीम् ॥
शोकविह्वलया वाचा कृच्छ्राद् वचनम् अब्रवीत् ॥
वत्से शोको न ते कार्यः प्राप्येदं व्यसनं महत् ॥
स्त्रीधर्माणाम् अभिज्ञासि शीलाचारवती तथा ॥
न त्वां संदेष्टुम् अर्हामि भर्तॄन् प्रति शुचिस्मिते ॥
साध्वीगुणसमाधानैर् भूषितं ते कुलद्वयम् ॥
सभाग्याः कुरवश् चेमे ये न दग्धास् त्वयानघे ॥
अरिष्टं व्रज पन्थानं मदनुध्यानबृंहिता ॥
भाविन्य् अर्थे हि सत्स्त्रीणां वैक्लव्यं नोपजायते ॥
गुरुधर्माभिगुप्ता च श्रेयः क्षिप्रम् अवाप्स्यसि ॥
सहदेवश् च मे पुत्रः सदावेक्ष्यो वने वसन् ॥
यथेदं व्यसनं प्राप्य नास्य सीदेन् महन् मनः ॥

bhāviny arthe hi satstrīṇāṃ vaiklavyaṃ nopajāyate ||
gurudharmābhiguptā ca śreyaḥ kṣipram avāpsyasi ||
sahadevaś ca me putraḥ sadāvekṣyo vane vasan ||
yathedaṃ vyasanaṃ prāpya nāsya sīden mahan manaḥ ||
And Kunti, sorely tormented, seeing Draupadi departing, with a voice overwhelmed by grief, spoke with difficulty: "Child, you must not grieve, having met with this great calamity. You are versed in the duties of wives, full of good character and good conduct. It is not fitting for me to instruct you concerning your husbands, O bright-smiling one; the twin lineage is adorned by you through the union of a chaste woman's virtues. Fortunate are these Kurus, who have not been burned by you, O flawless one! Go by an auspicious path, strengthened by my thought of you. For in good women, faced with what is to come, faintheartedness does not arise; and, guarded by the dharma of reverence for elders, you will soon attain welfare. And Sahadeva, my son, always watch over him as he lives in the forest, so that, having met with this calamity, his great spirit may not sink."

The mother consoles her daughter-in-law not with empty words but with an acknowledgment of her perfection: "it is not fitting for me to instruct you" is the highest praise for a purity that is itself its own law. Telling are the words "fortunate are the Kurus, who have not been burned by you": the wrath of a chaste woman who has been wronged could have consumed her offenders, and only her gentleness spares them -- so the silence of an insulted righteous woman is an unseen mercy toward the unworthy. In charging Draupadi to watch over young Sahadeva, Kunti, in her own grief, cares for the weakest: a mother's love does not close itself off in sorrow but reaches out to those in need. The verse teaches that true consolation rests on the truth of the one consoled's worth; that the gentleness of wronged purity is more fearsome than any curse; and that love, even in disaster, thinks first of others before itself.
