वैशंपायन उवाच
एवं द्यूतजिताः पार्थाः कोपिताश् च दुरात्मभिः ॥
धार्तराष्ट्रैः सहामात्यैर् निर्ययुर् गजसाह्वयात् ॥
वर्धमानपुरद्वारेणाभिनिष्क्रम्य ते तदा ॥
उदङ्मुखाः शस्त्रभृतः प्रययुः सह कृष्णया ॥
इन्द्रसेनादयश् चैनान् भृत्याः परिचतुर्दश ॥
रथैर् अनुययुः शीघ्रैः स्त्रिय आदाय सर्वशः ॥
vaiśaṃpāyana uvāca
evaṃ dyūtajitāḥ pārthāḥ kopitāś ca durātmabhiḥ ||
dhārtarāṣṭraiḥ sahāmātyair niryayur gajasāhvayāt ||
vardhamānapuradvāreṇābhiniṣkramya te tadā ||
udaṅmukhāḥ śastrabhṛtaḥ prayayuḥ saha kṛṣṇayā ||
indrasenādayaś cainān bhṛtyāḥ paricaturdaśa ||
rathair anuyayuḥ śīghraiḥ striya ādāya sarvaśaḥ ||
Vaishampayana said: "Thus the Parthas, defeated at dice and angered by the wicked sons of Dhritarashtra together with their counselors, departed from Hastinapura. Going out through the Vardhamana gate, they set off northward, armed, together with Krishna-Draupadi. Indrasena and the other servants, fourteen in number, swiftly followed them on chariots, bringing the women with them."

The exodus is told calmly, without outward pathos: the heroes do not flee but go forth bearing arms and dignity. Even when dharma suffers a temporary defeat, it does not become helpless; it simply leaves the defiled place behind.
