विग्रहो हि महाप्राज्ञ स्वजनेन विगर्हितः ॥
अधर्म्यम् अयशस्यं च मा राजन् प्रतिपद्यथाः ॥
समीक्षा यादृशी ह्य् अस्य पाण्डवान् प्रति भारत ॥
उपेक्ष्यमाणा सा राजन् महान्तम् अनयं स्पृशेत् ॥
अथ वायं सुमन्दात्मा वनं गच्छतु ते सुतः ॥
पाण्डवैः सहितो राजन्न् एक एवासहायवान् ॥
ततः संसर्गजः स्नेहः पुत्रस्य तव पाण्डवैः ॥
यदि स्यात् कृतकार्यो ऽद्य भवेस् त्वं मनुजेश्वर ॥
अथ वा जायमानस्य यच् छीलम् अनुजायते ॥
श्रूयते तन् महाराज नामृतस्यापसर्पति ॥
कथं वा मन्यते भीष्मो द्रोणो वा विदुरो ऽपि वा ॥
भवान् वात्र क्षमं कार्यं पुरा चार्थो ऽतिवर्तते ॥

pāṇḍavaiḥ sahito rājann eka evāsahāyavān ||
tataḥ saṃsargajaḥ snehaḥ putrasya tava pāṇḍavaiḥ ||
yadi syāt kṛtakāryo 'dya bhaves tvaṃ manujeśvara ||
atha vā jāyamānasya yac chīlam anujāyate ||
śrūyate tan mahārāja nāmṛtasyāpasarpati ||
kathaṃ vā manyate bhīṣmo droṇo vā viduro 'pi vā ||
bhavān vātra kṣamaṃ kāryaṃ purā cārtho 'tivartate ||
'Strife with one's own kin, O greatly wise one, is blameworthy, contrary to dharma, and inglorious; do not enter into it, O king. The way he looks upon the Pandavas, if left unheeded, will lead to great calamity. Or else let this evil son of yours go alone, without helpers, into the forest together with the Pandavas; if from association with them affection is born in your son, you will have achieved your purpose this very day, O lord of men. But it is said that whatever character accompanies one's birth does not depart until death. How, then, would Bhishma, Drona, Vidura, and you yourself judge the right course, before the matter oversteps its limit?'

Vyāsa leaves open even for Duryodhana the possibility of healing through association with the Pandavas, yet he immediately reminds us soberly of the force of character. Hope must not turn into naivety: evil must be stopped before it crosses its limit.
