वैचित्रवीर्य नृपते सत्यम् आह यथा भवान् ॥
दृढं वेद्मि परं पुत्रं परं पुत्रान् न विद्यते ॥
इन्द्रो ऽप्य् अश्रुनिपातेन सुरभ्या प्रतिबोधितः ॥
अन्यैः समृद्धैर् अप्य् अर्थैर् न सुताद् विद्यते परम् ॥
अत्र ते वर्तयिष्यामि महद् आख्यानम् उत्तमम् ॥
सुरभ्याश् चैव संवादम् इन्द्रस्य च विशां पते ॥
त्रिविष्टपगता राजन् सुरभिः प्रारुदत् किल ॥
गवां मात पुरा तात ताम् इन्द्रो ऽन्वकृपायत ॥

译文

Vyasa said: "O king, son of Vichitravirya, you have spoken the truth. I know for certain: a son is dear, and nothing is dearer than sons. Even Indra understood this through the falling tears of Surabhi; no other abundant blessings surpass a son. Here I shall tell you a great and excellent tale — the dialogue of Surabhi and Indra. Once, O king, Surabhi, the mother of cows, while dwelling in Trivishtapa, wept; Indra took pity on her."
