एवं विनिहतः संख्ये किर्मीरो मनुजाधिप ॥
भीमेन वचनात् तस्य धर्मराजस्य कौरव ॥
ततो निष्कण्टकं कृत्वा वनं तद् अपराजितः ॥
द्रौपद्या सह धर्मज्ञो वसतिं ताम् उवास ह ॥
समाश्वास्य च ते सर्वे द्रौपदीं भरतर्षभाः ॥
प्रहृष्टमनसः प्रीत्या प्रशशंसुर् वृकोदरम् ॥
भीमबाहुबलोत्पिष्टे विनष्टे राक्षसे ततः ॥
विविशुस् तद् वनं वीराः क्षेमं निहतकण्टकम् ॥
स मया गच्छता मार्गे विनिकीर्णो भयावहः ॥
वने महति दुष्टात्मा दृष्टो भीमबलाद् धतः ॥
तत्राश्रौषम् अहं चैतत् कर्म भीमस्य भारत ॥
ब्राह्मणानां कथयतां ये तत्रासन् समागताः ॥
वैशंपायन उवाच
एवं विनिहतं संख्ये किर्मीरं राक्षसोत्तमम् ॥
श्रुत्वा ध्यानपरो राजा निशश्वासार्तवत् तदा ॥
evaṃ vinihataḥ saṃkhye kirmīro manujādhipa ||
bhīmena vacanāt tasya dharmarājasya kaurava ||
tato niṣkaṇṭakaṃ kṛtvā vanaṃ tad aparājitaḥ ||
draupadyā saha dharmajño vasatiṃ tām uvāsa ha ||
samāśvāsya ca te sarve draupadīṃ bharatarṣabhāḥ ||
prahṛṣṭamanasaḥ prītyā praśaśaṃsur vṛkodaram ||
bhīmabāhubalotpiṣṭe vinaṣṭe rākṣase tataḥ ||
viviśus tad vanaṃ vīrāḥ kṣemaṃ nihatakaṇṭakam ||
sa mayā gacchatā mārge vinikīrṇo bhayāvahaḥ ||
vane mahati duṣṭātmā dṛṣṭo bhīmabalād dhataḥ ||
tatrāśrauṣam ahaṃ caitat karma bhīmasya bhārata ||
brāhmaṇānāṃ kathayatāṃ ye tatrāsan samāgatāḥ ||
vaiśaṃpāyana uvāca
evaṃ vinihataṃ saṃkhye kirmīraṃ rākṣasottamam ||
śrutvā dhyānaparo rājā niśaśvāsārtavat tadā ||
Vidura said: "Thus was Kirmira slain in battle by Bhima, at the word of Dharmaraja, O Kaurava. Then the unconquered knower of dharma, having freed that forest of its thorn, settled there together with Draupadi. All those best of the Bharatas, having comforted Draupadi, praised Vrikodara with joyful hearts and affection. When the rakshasa had been destroyed, crushed by the strength of Bhima's arms, the heroes entered that forest, now safe, its thorn struck down. Later, as I traveled that road, I myself saw in the great forest the dreadful body of that evil-souled one, slain by Bhima's strength. There I heard this tale of Bhima's deed from the brahmins who had gathered and were telling it, O Bharata." Vaishampayana said: "Hearing that Kirmira, foremost of rakshasas, had thus been slain in battle, the king, sunk in thought, then sighed like one in pain."

The outcome of the tale matters for Dhritarashtra: the forest became safe where Bhima tore out its thorn. But in Hastinapura the thorn remains within the dynasty itself. The king's sigh shows that he has grasped the danger -- yet understanding has not yet become resolve.
