न तात हृष्यामि न च स्मयामि प्रहर्षजः माम् भजते न दर्पः तव आपदम् तु अद्य समीक्ष्य रामम् सत्यव्रतम् दाशरथिम् स्मरामिna tāta hṛṣyāmi na ca smayāmi praharṣajaḥ mām bhajate na darpaḥ tava āpadam tu adya samīkṣya rāmam satyavratam dāśarathim smarāmino, child, I do not rejoice nor do I smile; pride born of delight does not touch me; seeing your calamity today, I recall Rama, son of Dasharatha, true to his vow
स च अपि राजा सह लक्ष्मणेन वने निवासम् पितुः एव शासनात् धन्वी चरन् पार्थ पुरा मया एव दृष्टः गिरेः ऋष्यमूकस्य सानौsa ca api rājā saha lakṣmaṇena vane nivāsam pituḥ eva śāsanāt dhanvī caran pārtha purā mayā eva dṛṣṭaḥ gireḥ ṛṣyamūkasya sānauand that king, together with Lakshmana, dwelling in the forest by his father's command alone, wandering bow in hand, o Partha -- I myself saw him before on the ridge of Mount Rishyamuka
सहस्रनेत्रप्रतिमः महात्मा मयस्य जेता नमुचेः च हन्ता पितुः निदेशात् अनघः स्वधर्मम् वने वासम् दाशरथिः चकारsahasranetrapratimaḥ mahātmā mayasya jetā namuceḥ ca hantā pituḥ nideśāt anaghaḥ svadharmam vane vāsam dāśarathiḥ cakārathe great soul, equal to the thousand-eyed one, the conqueror of Maya and slayer of Namuchi, the sinless son of Dasharatha, by his father's command, carried out his own dharma of dwelling in the forest
स च अपि शक्रस्य समप्रभावः महानुभावः समरेषु अजेयः विहाय भोगान् अचरत् वनेषु न ईशे बलस्य इति चरेत् अधर्मम्sa ca api śakrasya samaprabhāvaḥ mahānubhāvaḥ samareṣu ajeyaḥ vihāya bhogān acarat vaneṣu na īśe balasya iti caret adharmamand he, equal in splendor to Shakra, of great might, unconquerable in battles, having abandoned pleasures, wandered in the forests: one should not commit adharma thinking that strength grants the right to rule
नृपाः च नाभागभगीरथादयः महीम् इमाम् सागरान्ताम् विजित्य सत्येन ते अपि अजयन् तात लोकान् न ईशे बलस्य इति चरेत् अधर्मम्nṛpāḥ ca nābhāgabhagīrathādayaḥ mahīm imām sāgarāntām vijitya satyena te api ajayan tāta lokān na īśe balasya iti caret adharmamand kings such as Nabhaga and Bhagiratha, having conquered this earth to its ocean bounds, conquered the worlds by truth, child; one should not commit adharma thinking that strength grants the right to rule
अलर्कम् आहुः नरवर्य सन्तम् सत्यव्रतम् काशिकरूषराजम् विहाय राष्ट्राणि वसूनि च एव न ईशे बलस्य इति चरेत् अधर्मम्alarkam āhuḥ naravarya santam satyavratam kāśikarūṣarājam vihāya rāṣṭrāṇi vasūni ca eva na īśe balasya iti caret adharmamthey say of Alarka, best of men, the saintly one, true to his vow, king of Kashi and Karusha, that he abandoned his kingdoms and riches; one should not commit adharma thinking that strength grants the right to rule
धात्रा विधिः यः विहितः पुराणः तम् पूजयन्तः नरवर्य सन्तः सप्तर्षयः पार्थ दिवि प्रभान्ति न ईशे बलस्य इति चरेत् अधर्मम्dhātrā vidhiḥ yaḥ vihitaḥ purāṇaḥ tam pūjayantaḥ naravarya santaḥ saptarṣayaḥ pārtha divi prabhānti na īśe balasya iti caret adharmamthe saintly Seven Sages, o Partha, honoring the ancient ordinance established by Dhatri, shine in heaven; one should not commit adharma thinking that strength grants the right to rule
महाबलान् पर्वतकूटमात्रान् विषाणिनः पश्य गजान् नरेन्द्र स्थितान् निदेशे नरवर्य धातुः न ईशे बलस्य इति चरेत् अधर्मम्mahābalān parvatakūṭamātrān viṣāṇinaḥ paśya gajān narendra sthitān nideśe naravarya dhātuḥ na īśe balasya iti caret adharmambehold, o king, the mighty tusked elephants, huge as mountain peaks, standing fixed in the ordinance of Dhatri; one should not commit adharma thinking that strength grants the right to rule
सर्वाणि भूतानि नरेन्द्र पश्य यथा यथावत् विहितम् विधात्रा स्वयोनितः तत् कुरुते प्रभावान् न ईशे बलस्य इति चरेत् अधर्मम्sarvāṇi bhūtāni narendra paśya yathā yathāvat vihitam vidhātrā svayonitaḥ tat kurute prabhāvān na īśe balasya iti caret adharmambehold, o king, all beings act according to what has been duly ordained by the Ordainer; each, from its own origin, manifests its powers; one should not commit adharma thinking that strength grants the right to rule
सत्येन धर्मेण यथार्हवृत्त्या ह्रिया तथा सर्वभूतानि अतीत्य यशः च तेजः च तव अपि दीप्तम् विभावसोः भास्करस्य इव पार्थsatyena dharmeṇa yathārhavṛttyā hriyā tathā sarvabhūtāni atītya yaśaḥ ca tejaḥ ca tava api dīptam vibhāvasoḥ bhāskarasya iva pārthaby truth, by dharma, by conduct becoming one's station, and likewise by modesty, you have surpassed all beings, and your fame and splendor, o Partha, blaze like fire and the sun
यथाप्रतिज्ञम् च महानुभाव कृच्छ्रम् वने वासम् इमम् निरुष्य ततः श्रियम् तेजसा स्वेन दीप्ताम् आदास्यसे पार्थिव कौरवेभ्यःyathāpratijñam ca mahānubhāva kṛcchram vane vāsam imam niruṣya tataḥ śriyam tejasā svena dīptām ādāsyase pārthiva kauravebhyaḥhaving fulfilled your vow, o magnanimous one, and having endured this hard forest dwelling, then by your own might you shall reclaim the shining royal fortune from the Kauravas, o king
