译文

'A former benefactor, if his fault is not grave, should be forgiven. One should also forgive those who erred out of folly, for wisdom is not easily attained by everyone. But if a man does wrong knowingly and then passes it off as ignorance, such a crooked man should be punished even for a small offense. A first offense may be forgiven; a second already calls for punishment. One should weigh place, time, one's own strength, and the opinion of the world. Such are the times for patience; but when people go on doing harm regardless, the time for strength arrives.' Draupadi concluded: 'This is exactly the time for strength that I see now for you: the sons of Dhritarashtra are greedy and constantly do harm. There is no time now to be patient with the Kurus. The gentle man is despised, the stern man feared; whoever knows both measures in due time is a lord of the earth.'
