भगवान् उवाच
ददानि ते ऽस्त्रं दयितम् अहं पाशुपतं महत् ॥
समर्थो धारणे मोक्षे संहारे चापि पाण्डव ॥
नैतद् वेद महेन्द्रो ऽपि न यमो न च यक्षराट् ॥
वरुणो वाथ वा वायुः कुतो वेत्स्यन्ति मानवाः ॥
न त्व् एतत् सहसा पार्थ मोक्तव्यं पुरुषे क्व चित् ॥
जगद् विनिर्दहेत् सर्वम् अल्पतेजसि पातितम् ॥
अवध्यो नाम नास्त्य् अस्य त्रैलोक्ये सचराचरे ॥
मनसा चक्षुषा वाचा धनुषा च निपात्यते ॥

dadāni te 'straṃ dayitam ahaṃ pāśupataṃ mahat ||
samartho dhāraṇe mokṣe saṃhāre cāpi pāṇḍava ||
naitad veda mahendro 'pi na yamo na ca yakṣarāṭ ||
varuṇo vātha vā vāyuḥ kuto vetsyanti mānavāḥ ||
na tv etat sahasā pārtha moktavyaṃ puruṣe kva cit ||
jagad vinirdahet sarvam alpatejasi pātitam ||
avadhyo nāma nāsty asya trailokye sacarācare ||
manasā cakṣuṣā vācā dhanuṣā ca nipātyate ||
The Blessed Lord said: "I give you my beloved great weapon, the Pashupata. You are capable of holding it, releasing it, and recalling it. Not even Mahendra knows it, nor Yama, nor the lord of the yakshas, nor Varuna, nor Vayu; what then of men. But do not release it hastily against any man: should it fall upon one of little power, it will burn the whole world. In the three worlds there is none it cannot strike down — by thought, by glance, by word, or by the bow."
