Indra said: 'Those two ancient and greatest of sages, Nara and Narayana, know them now as Hrishikesha and Dhananjaya. The sacred Badari, unattainable even by the gods and great sages, was the abode of Vishnu and Jishnu; from there flows the Ganga, frequented by siddhas and charanas. By my command these two brilliant beings were born on earth to relieve the earth of her burden. Certain asuras called the Nivatakavachas, grown arrogant from the boons granted them, have turned hostile to us and plot to slay the gods. These fearsome sons of Danu dwell in Patala, and all the hosts of the gods together are not able to fight them. That Vishnu, Madhusudana, now present on earth, is the Blessed Ajita Hari, known as Kapila, at whose mere sight the sons of Sagara once perished as they dug into Rasatala. There is a great task for us, which will without doubt be accomplished by him together with Partha in a mighty battle. This hero is able to stand against all the Nivatakavachas together; having slain them in battle, he will return once more to the world of men.'

Here the center of the mission is directly disclosed: Krishna and Arjuna act as Nara and Narayana. The earthly story of the Pandavas is woven into Hari's larger work of relieving the earth.
