बृहदश्व उवाच
ततस् तु याते वार्ष्णेये पुण्यश्लोकस्य दीव्यतः ॥
पुष्करेण हृतं राज्यं यच् चान्यद् वसु किं चन ॥
हृतराज्यं नलं राजन् प्रहसन् पुष्करो ऽब्रवीत् ॥
द्यूतं प्रवर्ततां भूयः प्रतिपाणो ऽस्ति कस् तव ॥
शिष्टा ते दमयन्त्य् एका सर्वम् अन्यद् धृतं मया ॥
दमयन्त्याः पणः साधु वर्ततां यदि मन्यसे ॥
पुष्करेणैवम् उक्तस्य पुण्यश्लोकस्य मन्युना ॥
व्यदीर्यतेव हृदयं न चैनं किं चिद् अब्रवीत् ॥
ततः पुष्करम् आलोक्य नलः परममन्युमान् ॥
उत्सृज्य सर्वगात्रेभ्यो भूषणानि महायशाः ॥
एकवासा असंवीतः सुहृच्छोकविवर्धनः ॥
निश्चक्राम तदा राजा त्यक्त्वा सुविपुलां श्रियम् ॥
दमयन्त्य् एकवस्त्रा तं गच्छन्तं पृष्ठतो ऽन्वियात् ॥
स तया बाह्यतः सार्धं त्रिरात्रं नैषधो ऽवसत् ॥
पुष्करस् तु महाराज घोषयाम् आस वै पुरे ॥
नले यः सम्यग् आतिष्ठेत् स गच्छेद् वध्यतां मम ॥
पुष्करस्य तु वाक्येन तस्य विद्वेषणेन च ॥
पौरा न तस्मिन् सत्कारं कृतवन्तो युधिष्ठिर ॥
स तथा नगराभ्याशे सत्कारार्हो न सत्कृतः ॥
त्रिरात्रम् उषितो राजा जलमात्रेण वर्तयन् ॥

vyadīryateva hṛdayaṃ na cainaṃ kiṃ cid abravīt ||
tataḥ puṣkaram ālokya nalaḥ paramamanyumān ||
utsṛjya sarvagātrebhyo bhūṣaṇāni mahāyaśāḥ ||
ekavāsā asaṃvītaḥ suhṛcchokavivardhanaḥ ||
niścakrāma tadā rājā tyaktvā suvipulāṃ śriyam ||
damayanty ekavastrā taṃ gacchantaṃ pṛṣṭhato 'nviyāt ||
sa tayā bāhyataḥ sārdhaṃ trirātraṃ naiṣadho 'vasat ||
puṣkaras tu mahārāja ghoṣayām āsa vai pure ||
nale yaḥ samyag ātiṣṭhet sa gacched vadhyatāṃ mama ||
puṣkarasya tu vākyena tasya vidveṣaṇena ca ||
paurā na tasmin satkāraṃ kṛtavanto yudhiṣṭhira ||
sa tathā nagarābhyāśe satkārārho na satkṛtaḥ ||
trirātram uṣito rājā jalamātreṇa vartayan ||
Brihadashva said: "When Varshneya had gone, Pushkara won from the playing Punyashloka his kingdom and all his remaining wealth. Seeing Nala without a kingdom, he laughed and said: 'Let the game go on. What stake do you have left? Only Damayanti remains to you; everything else I have taken. If you think it right, let Damayanti be the stake.' At these words of Pushkara, Punyashloka's heart seemed to burst with rage, yet he said nothing in answer. Looking at Pushkara, Nala of great fame took the ornaments from all his limbs and, in a single garment, uncovered, deepening the grief of his friends, left the city, abandoning his vast splendor. Damayanti, likewise in a single garment, followed after him. With her the lord of Nishadha lived outside the city for three nights. But Pushkara proclaimed in the city: 'Whoever gives Nala proper welcome shall be put to death by me.' Because of Pushkara's words and fear of him, the townsfolk showed Nala no honor. Thus the king, worthy of honor, unhonored near the city, spent three nights sustaining himself on water alone."
