Sudeva said: "The king of Vidarbha, righteous in soul, mighty Bhīma, has a daughter known as the lovely Damayantī. King Nala of the Niṣadhas, son of Vīrasena, is the husband of this virtuous woman, wife of the wise Puṇyaśloka. He was defeated at dice by his brother, stripped of his kingdom, and departed together with Damayantī; since then no one has known of them. For Damayantī's sake we wander this earth, and this girl has been found in the house of your son. Among mortal women none equals her in beauty. Between her brows there is a birthmark, lovely and innate, like a lotus upon a dark-skinned woman; I noticed it even though it was concealed. Dirt had covered it as a thin cloud covers the moon. This mark was fashioned by the Creator to set her apart. Like the crescent moon on the first day, dimmed, it does not shine brightly, yet her beauty is not lost: even covered in dirt and unadorned, her body plainly gleams like gold. By this form and by this birthmark I have recognized the goddess, as fire is known though hidden by its own heat."

The birthmark becomes the sign of an unchanging identity. Damayantī may be stripped of ornaments, of her name, of her peace, but her truth is not erased.
