Addressed thus, the gods took leave of Pitamaha and, placing Narayana at their head, went to the hermitage of Dadhichi. It stood on the far bank of the Sarasvati, surrounded by many trees and vines, resounding with the humming of bees as though with singers of the Sama, mingled with the cries of cuckoos and the calls of jivamjivaka birds; there roamed buffaloes, boars, srimaras, and chamaras, unafraid of tigers; cow-elephants and bull-elephants with temples streaming with musth entered the lakes and played, filling the whole region with sound; lions and tigers roared with great cries, while other beasts lay hidden in caves and ravines. In its many quarters this hermitage, lovely and delighting the heart, resembled Trivishtapa itself. There the gods beheld Dadhichi, radiant as the sun, his body blazing like Pitamaha in his glory. They bowed to his feet, O king, and asked for the boon, as Parameshthin had instructed. Then Dadhichi, filled with the highest joy, spoke thus to those best of gods: "Today I shall do what is good for you, O gods; I shall give up even my own body." Having spoken thus, that foremost of men, master of himself, at once released his life-breaths. Then the gods, following the instruction, took the bones of him whose life had departed. Rejoicing, for the sake of victory they went to Tvashtar and told him the matter. Tvashtar, hearing their words, rejoiced, and with focused effort and purity forged a vajra of exceedingly fierce form. Having made it, he joyfully said to Shakra: "With this foremost of vajras, O god, today reduce to ashes the fierce enemy of the gods. Then, having slain the foe together with his host, rule happily over the whole of heaven, dwelling in the sky." Thus instructed by Tvashtar, Purandara joyfully and purely took hold of the vajra.

The gods go to Dadhichi with Narayana at their head: even the celestials need the highest guidance. Victory is born from the union of divine design, the sage's sacrifice, and Indra's action.
