Yudhishthira said: 'How was Rishyashringa, the son of Kashyapa, born from a doe through the union of such opposite wombs? And how did he come to be endowed with austerity? Why did Shakra, the slayer of Bala and Vritra, out of fear of this wise boy, send rain when a drought had begun? What was the king's daughter Shanta like, she who kept her vows and captivated the heart of one who was like a creature of the forest? And if Lomapada, the royal sage, was accounted righteous, why did Pakashasana not send rain in his domain? Tell me all this in full, O blessed one, exactly as it was, for I wish to hear of the deeds of Rishyashringa.'

Yudhishthira does not ask out of idle curiosity: what interests him is the connection between purity, a king's fault, the role of women, and rain. In this way the tale becomes a lesson in governance and inner discipline.
