युधिष्ठिर उवाच
उपस्पृश्यैव भगवन्न् अस्यां नद्यां तपोधन ॥
मानुषाद् अस्मि विषयाद् अपेतः पश्य लोमश ॥
सर्वांल् लोकान् प्रपश्यामि प्रसादात् तव सुव्रत ॥
वैखानसानां जपताम् एष शब्दो महात्मनाम् ॥
लोमश उवाच
त्रिशतं वै सहस्राणि योजनानां युधिष्ठिर ॥
यत्र ध्वनिं शृणोष्य् एनं तूष्णीम् आस्स्व विशां पते ॥
एतत् स्वयंभुवो राजन् वनं रम्यं प्रकाशते ॥
यत्रायजत कौन्तेय विश्वकर्मा प्रतापवान् ॥
यस्मिन् यज्ञे हि भूर् दत्ता कश्यपाय महात्मने ॥
सपर्वतवनोद्देशा दक्षिणा वै स्वयंभुवा ॥
अवासीदच् च कौन्तेय दत्तमात्रा मही तदा ॥
उवाच चापि कुपिता लोकेश्वरम् इदं प्रभुम् ॥
न मां मर्त्याय भगवन् कस्मै चिद् दातुम् अर्हसि ॥
प्रदानं मोघम् एतत् ते यास्याम्य् एषा रसातलम् ॥
विषीदन्तीं तु तां दृष्ट्वा कश्यपो भगवान् ऋषिः ॥
प्रसादयां बभूवाथ ततो भूमिं विशां पते ॥
ततः प्रसन्ना पृथिवी तपसा तस्य पाण्डव ॥
पुनर् उन्मज्ज्य सलिलाद् वेदीरूपा स्थिता बभौ ॥
सैषा प्रकाशते राजन् वेदी संस्थानलक्षणा ॥
आरुह्यात्र महाराज वीर्यवान् वै भविष्यसि ॥
अहं च ते स्वस्त्ययनं प्रयोक्ष्ये; यथा त्वम् एनाम् अधिरोक्ष्यसे ऽद्य ॥
स्पृष्टा हि मर्त्येन ततः समुद्रम्; एषा वेदी प्रविशत्य् आजमीढ ॥
अग्निर् मित्रो योनिर् आपो ऽथ देव्यो; विष्णो रेतस् त्वम् अमृतस्य नाभिः ॥
एवं ब्रुवन् पाण्डव सत्यवाक्यं; वेदीम् इमां त्वं तरसाधिरोह ॥
वैशंपायन उवाच
ततः कृतस्वस्त्ययनो महात्मा; युधिष्ठिरः सागरगाम् अगच्छत् ॥
कृत्वा च तच्छासनम् अस्य सर्वं; महेन्द्रम् आसाद्य निशाम् उवास ॥

lomaśa uvāca
triśataṃ vai sahasrāṇi yojanānāṃ yudhiṣṭhira ||
yatra dhvaniṃ śṛṇoṣy enaṃ tūṣṇīm āssva viśāṃ pate ||
etat svayaṃbhuvo rājan vanaṃ ramyaṃ prakāśate ||
yatrāyajata kaunteya viśvakarmā pratāpavān ||
yasmin yajñe hi bhūr dattā kaśyapāya mahātmane ||
saparvatavanoddeśā dakṣiṇā vai svayaṃbhuvā ||
avāsīdac ca kaunteya dattamātrā mahī tadā ||
uvāca cāpi kupitā lokeśvaram idaṃ prabhum ||
na māṃ martyāya bhagavan kasmai cid dātum arhasi ||
pradānaṃ mogham etat te yāsyāmy eṣā rasātalam ||
viṣīdantīṃ tu tāṃ dṛṣṭvā kaśyapo bhagavān ṛṣiḥ ||
prasādayāṃ babhūvātha tato bhūmiṃ viśāṃ pate ||
tataḥ prasannā pṛthivī tapasā tasya pāṇḍava ||
punar unmajjya salilād vedīrūpā sthitā babhau ||
saiṣā prakāśate rājan vedī saṃsthānalakṣaṇā ||
āruhyātra mahārāja vīryavān vai bhaviṣyasi ||
ahaṃ ca te svastyayanaṃ prayokṣye; yathā tvam enām adhirokṣyase 'dya ||
spṛṣṭā hi martyena tataḥ samudram; eṣā vedī praviśaty ājamīḍha ||
agnir mitro yonir āpo 'tha devyo; viṣṇo retas tvam amṛtasya nābhiḥ ||
evaṃ bruvan pāṇḍava satyavākyaṃ; vedīm imāṃ tvaṃ tarasādhiroha ||
vaiśaṃpāyana uvāca
tataḥ kṛtasvastyayano mahātmā; yudhiṣṭhiraḥ sāgaragām agacchat ||
kṛtvā ca tacchāsanam asya sarvaṃ; mahendram āsādya niśām uvāsa ||
Yudhishthira said: "O blessed one, rich in austerity, no sooner have I touched this river than I feel as though I have left the human realm. Behold, Lomasha: by your grace I see all the worlds. This is the sound of the great vaikhanasas performing their japa." Lomasha said: "Yudhishthira, this sound that you hear carries three hundred thousand yojanas; be silent, lord of men. Here, O king, is the beautiful forest of the Self-born; here, Kaunteya, mighty Vishvakarman performed sacrifice. In that sacrifice the Self-born gave to great Kashyapa the earth together with its mountains and forests as dakshina. But no sooner was she given than the earth, Kaunteya, sank down and in anger said to the Lord, the master of the world: 'O blessed one, you must not give me to any mortal. This gift of yours is in vain; I shall descend into Rasatala.' Seeing her sinking, the blessed rishi Kashyapa began to propitiate the earth. Satisfied by his austerity, the earth rose again from the water and shone, standing in the form of a vedi. Here she is visible, O king, by the marks of a vedi's structure. Ascend here, great king, and you will become mighty. I shall perform for you a rite of blessing, so that you may ascend upon her today. For when a mortal touches her, O Ajamidha, this vedi enters the ocean. Speaking the true word: 'Agni, Mitra, the womb, the waters and the goddesses; Vishnu, you are the seed and the navel of immortality,' you, O Pandava, must swiftly ascend this vedi." Vaishampayana said: "Then, the rite of blessing performed, the great-souled Yudhishthira went to the vedi leading toward the ocean; having carried out all his instruction, he reached Mahendra and spent the night."

The earth here is not a thing to be disposed of irresponsibly: she answers back and withdraws. Only Kashyapa's austerity and reverence restore her as a sacred vedi.
