Lomasha said: "It is heard, O king, that here Nriga, performing a sacrifice, satisfied Purandara with soma, and he, gratified, fell into sacred intoxication. Here the gods together with Indra and the Prajapatis performed many great sacrifices with abundant gifts. Here king Amurtarayas, in seven horse-sacrifices, satisfied with soma the lord who bears the vajra. In these seven sacrifices, all the property prescribed for the rite, whether of wood or of earth, was of gold. Seven renowned devices stood at his sacrifices, and above every sacrificial post there were seven chashalas. These shining golden posts at his sacrifices, Yudhishthira, were raised up by the gods together with Indra themselves. At the finest sacrifices of king Gaya, Indra rejoiced in the soma, and the twice-born in the gifts. As the grains of sand in the world are innumerable, as the stars in the sky and the streams of rain are innumerable, so innumerable was the wealth that Gaya gave to those present at the seven sacrifices. What has been named here could still be counted, but the largesse of such a giver cannot be counted. With golden cows fashioned by Vishvakarman he satisfied the brahmins who had come from every direction. The earth, where the great Gaya performed his sacrifices, was almost entirely covered with sacrificial monuments. By this deed, Bharata, he attained the worlds of Indra; whoever touches the water of the Payoshni attains the same world as he. Therefore, sinless king, touch the water here together with your brothers, and you, lord of the earth, will become cleansed of sin."

Gaya's abundance is described not for the sake of splendor itself: wealth becomes sacred when it leaves possession and becomes a gift. A sacrifice is measured not by the gleam of gold but by how fully it frees the heart from miserliness.
