युधिष्ठिर उवाच
कथंवीर्यः स राजाभूत् सोमको वदतां वर ॥
कर्माण्य् अस्य प्रभावं च श्रोतुम् इच्छामि तत्त्वतः ॥
लोमश उवाच
युधिष्ठिरासीन् नृपतिः सोमको नाम धार्मिकः ॥
तस्य भार्याशतं राजन् सदृशीनाम् अभूत् तदा ॥
स वै यत्नेन महता तासु पुत्रं महीपतिः ॥
कं चिन् नासादयाम् आस कालेन महता अपि ॥
कदा चित् तस्य वृद्धस्य यतमानस्य यत्नतः ॥
जन्तुर् नाम सुतस् तस्मिन् स्त्रीशते समजायत ॥
तं जातं मातरः सर्वाः परिवार्य समासते ॥
सततं पृष्ठतः कृत्वा कामभोगान् विशां पते ॥
ततः पिपीलिका जन्तुं कदा चिद् अदशत् स्फिजि ॥
स दष्टो व्यनदद् राजंस् तेन दुःखेन बालकः ॥
ततस् ता मातरः सर्वाः प्राक्रोशन् भृशदुःखिताः ॥
परिवार्य जन्तुं सहिताः स शब्दस् तुमुलो ऽभवत् ॥
तम् आर्तनादं सहसा शुश्राव स महीपतिः ॥
अमात्यपरिषन्मध्ये उपविष्टः सहर्त्विजैः ॥
ततः प्रस्थापयाम् आस किम् एतद् इति पार्थिवः ॥
तस्मै क्षत्ता यथावृत्तम् आचचक्षे सुतं प्रति ॥
त्वरमाणः स चोत्थाय सोमकः सह मन्त्रिभिः ॥
प्रविश्यान्तःपुरं पुत्रम् आश्वासयद् अरिंदमः ॥
सान्त्वयित्वा तु तं पुत्रं निष्क्रम्यान्तःपुरान् नृपः ॥
ऋत्विजैः सहितो राजन् सहामात्य उपाविशत् ॥

sa vai yatnena mahatā tāsu putraṃ mahīpatiḥ ||
kaṃ cin nāsādayām āsa kālena mahatā api ||
kadā cit tasya vṛddhasya yatamānasya yatnataḥ ||
jantur nāma sutas tasmin strīśate samajāyata ||
taṃ jātaṃ mātaraḥ sarvāḥ parivārya samāsate ||
satataṃ pṛṣṭhataḥ kṛtvā kāmabhogān viśāṃ pate ||
tataḥ pipīlikā jantuṃ kadā cid adaśat sphiji ||
sa daṣṭo vyanadad rājaṃs tena duḥkhena bālakaḥ ||
tatas tā mātaraḥ sarvāḥ prākrośan bhṛśaduḥkhitāḥ ||
parivārya jantuṃ sahitāḥ sa śabdas tumulo 'bhavat ||
tam ārtanādaṃ sahasā śuśrāva sa mahīpatiḥ ||
amātyapariṣanmadhye upaviṣṭaḥ sahartvijaiḥ ||
tataḥ prasthāpayām āsa kim etad iti pārthivaḥ ||
tasmai kṣattā yathāvṛttam ācacakṣe sutaṃ prati ||
tvaramāṇaḥ sa cotthāya somakaḥ saha mantribhiḥ ||
praviśyāntaḥpuraṃ putram āśvāsayad ariṃdamaḥ ||
sāntvayitvā tu taṃ putraṃ niṣkramyāntaḥpurān nṛpaḥ ||
ṛtvijaiḥ sahito rājan sahāmātya upāviśat ||
Yudhishthira said: "What strength did that King Somaka possess, best of speakers? I wish to hear truly of his deeds and his majesty." Lomasha said: "Yudhishthira, there was a king named Somaka, a righteous man. He then had a hundred wives, all alike. Yet this lord of the earth, despite great effort, was for a long time unable to obtain from them a single son. Once, when the king was already old, after much striving, a son named Jantu was born to him among that hundred women. When he was born, all the mothers gathered around him and sat close by, ceaselessly setting him above every pleasure, lord of the people. One day an ant bit Jantu on the buttock; bitten, the child cried out in pain. Then all the mothers, deeply anguished, cried out; they surrounded Jantu together, and a great clamor arose. The lord of the earth suddenly heard this cry of anguish as he sat in the midst of his council of ministers together with the priests. Then the king sent someone to find out: 'What is this?' The chamberlain told him everything that had happened, concerning his son. Somaka, subduer of enemies, rose hastily with his ministers, entered the inner apartments, and comforted his son. Having consoled his son, the king came out of the inner apartments and sat down again together with the priests and ministers."
