Yudhishthira said: 'Fool, your dharma is perishing, and you do not see it. All beings among men, and even those born in other wombs -- gandharvas, yakshas, rakshasas, birds, and beasts -- live off human beings; therefore you too live off them. When this world prospers, your world prospers too; when it suffers, the deities grieve for it. Honored with havya and kavya offerings, they increase according to rule. We are the guardians of the kingdom, its protectors, O rakshasa; if the kingdom is unprotected, whence comes prosperity, whence happiness? A rakshasa must not despise a blameless king. We have not committed even the smallest wrong against you, devourer of men. One must not betray friends, nor those who have trusted, nor those whose food one has eaten, nor those in whose shelter one has found refuge. You lived among us honored, dwelling happily under our protection, eating our food, O evil-minded one. How then do you wish to carry us off? Just so, your conduct is in vain, your growth is in vain, your intellect is in vain; you deserve a vain death, and from today you will not go without your due. But if you are malicious and devoid of all dharma, then hand over our weapons and carry off Draupadi in battle. If you do this deed without understanding, you will gain in this world only unrighteousness and infamy. Having today laid hands on this human woman, O rakshasa, you have stirred up this poison and drunk it down, pot and all.'

Yudhishthira defends not only himself but the very principle of mutual duty. Guest, ruler, brahmanical form, a woman under protection -- Jatasura has defiled all of this in a single act.
