'After this the blessed Maghavan, lord of the gods and slayer of the enemies of the suras, mounted his radiant chariot and, as though smiling, said: "Dhananjaya, I knew you even before this coming. Now I will show you more, best of the Bharatas. You have already bathed many times in the tirthas, and you have performed this tapas too; you will go to heaven, Pandava. But a further and most difficult tapas must still be performed. Matali, by my order, will bring you to Tridiva. You are known to the gods and to the great-souled rishis." Then I said to Shakra: "Have mercy on me, blessed one. I choose you as my teacher for the sake of weapons, lord of the thirty gods." Indra said: "A cruel deed you will do, knower of weapons, scorcher of foes. Attain that purpose for which you desired weapons." I answered: "Slayer of foes, I will not use the divine astras against men, except to repel weapons. Give me these divine astras, lord of the immortals, and let me afterward win the worlds conquered by weapons." Indra said: "It was to test you that I said this, Dhananjaya. Your answer is worthy of my own son. Come to my abode and learn all the weapons, Bharata: those of Vayu, Agni, the Vasus, Varuna and the Maruts, the weapons of the Sadhyas and of Pitamaha, of the gandharvas, uragas, and rakshasas, all the Vaishnava astras, the Nairrita weapons, and all the weapons that are with me, O upholder of the Kurus."'

Arjuna passes the test precisely through restraint: he has no wish to turn divine power against men. This is what makes him worthy of the weapons, for weapons must be governed by discernment.
